Santo P. \u201cSonny\u201d Turiano, 91, of 1700 Hamilton Ave. Apt. 405 died Thursday, April 21, 2005 at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.
\nHe was born July 15, 1913 in Tyrone, a son of the late Vincenzo and Josephine (Lombardo) Turiano. On March 2, 1946 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Tyrone he married Rose M. Caffarelli.
\nSurviving are his wife, three sons, Vincent C. and wife Elizabeth of Hollidaysburg, Stephen P. and wife Marie of Tyrone, Mark R. and wife Nicole Fedeli of Hollidaysburg, six grandchildren, John McGregor, Shannon Beckwith, Wesley Turiano, Megan Turiano, Mariah Turiano and Celena Turiano, two great-grandchildren, Elle and John Robert McGregor II, a brother Charles Turiano of Altoona and a sister Rose Geraci of Tyrone. He was preceded in death by a son Ronald, five brothers Joseph, Anthony, James, Rosario, Domenick and three sisters, Mickey Moffa, Mary Turiano and Virginia Maisano.
\nMr. Turiano retired in July 1975 from Conrail Middle Division as Track Foreman following 40 years service.
\nHe was a US Army veteran of World War II retiring as a Sergeant First Class with Company C, 264th Infantry. He received the Silver Star Medal and the European African Middle Eastern service medal with four bronze stars. In addition he served in the Pennsylvania National Guard, Troop B retiring as Sergeant 1st Class following 32 years service.
\nHe was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, St. Gregory Council, Anderson-Denny VFW, Howard Gardner American Legion, Military Order of the Cootie, Blair County National Guard Veteran\u2019s Association, Kale Hollow Hunting Camp, Blazing Arrow Hook and Ladder Fire Company and the Tyrone Historical Society.
\nSonny was an avid Penn State football fan, gardener and cook.
\nMass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, April 23, 2005 at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew Church, with Fr. Joseph T. Orr, Celebrant. Interment with veteran\u2019s honors will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends will be received at Feller Memorial Home today from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of services.
