Moshannon Valley sophomore pitcher Amy Tomasko tossed a five-inning no hitter against the Bellwood-Antis girls softball team at the George O. Martin Field in Bellwood on Tuesday afternoon. Tomasko also singled twice and knocked in a run in the Lady Damsels 10-1 win over the B-A girls.
\n\u201cMoshannon Valley has a very fine team, they deserve a lot of credit,\u201d said Bellwood-Antis coach Alex Sitman. \u201cBut I was disappointed with the way we went about hitting the ball today, after all the time we have spent in practice working on hitting. Plus, we had some uncommon errors. We gave Mo Valley too many outs in several innings and they were able to score runs in bunches.\u201d
\nThe defending district champs improved their 2005 mark to 6-0 for third-year head coach Mike Bacher.
\nThe Lady Blue Devils best chance against Tomasko was in the bottom of the fifth, when losing pitcher Kayla Reider walked and Tomasko couldn\u2019t handle a hard smash to the mound by Jen Bilka to put runners at first and second. Reider stole third base to put runners at the corners, but Tomasko got out of the inning without any further damage and the Lady Damsels put the game away at the end of the inning.
\nTomasko was the only player on either team with two hits and Valerie Bacher\u2019s double was the only extra-base hit.
\nHeather Detwiler was the Lady Blue Devils only other baserunner picking up a walk.
\n\u201cWe had a couple hard-hit balls, but they were right at somebody,\u201d said Sitman. \u201cHopefully Christina Pfahler, who has been out with an injury will get back into the lineup this week. We have had to move some people around and that makes it even tougher than usual for us. What we need is for someone to step it up and get everybody else moving.\u201d
\nBellwood-Antis plays at Southern Huntingdon at 4 p.m. on Thursday, and then hosts Altoona on Friday with the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m.
