Hostler had four hits, three of them bunt singles to lead the Martin Oil attack in a 7-4 win over Barkman Oil. Martin Oil leads the championship finals two games to none. (The Daily Herald/Stacey Manning)

Suddenly, Martin Oil is playing defense and getting excellent pitching! On Friday evening at Vets Field in the second game of the George B. Kelley Federation championship finals, Martin Oil rode the pitching of 16-year old Trey Mock and the relief of Earnie Kelley to a 7-4 win that moved Martin Oil into a 2-0 advantage over Barkman Oil in the best-of-five finals.
Barkman Oil had all the wheels fall off, committing six errors that scored runs, or led to runs scored and doomed the Martinsburg crew to a two game deficit that forces them to win all three remaining games if they hope for a league title.
With Mock, Martin Oil’s second straight 16-year old rookie on the mound following last night’s starter Nate Gray, Barkman Oil manufactured a run in the top of the first. Tyler Nash was hit by a pitch, moved to second on an infield hit by Nate Dick and third when Josh Greenleaf hit into a Brian Hostler-to Nate Gray-to- Justin Miller double play. Nash scored the opening run of the game on a wild pitch.
Martin Oil came right back to take the lead, when Hostler beat out the first of three bunt singles, went to second on a wild pitch from Barkman starter Jacob Russell. Gary walked and both runners scored on an error on an Earnie Kelley grounder.
Barkman briefly tied the score in the third on a walk to Dick and double by Greenleaf, but Martin Oil put up two more tallies in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
Again Barkman Oil mistakes cost dearly. Hostler bunted his way on and continued to second on an error on the throw. Kelley was safe on an error with Hostler scoring on the play and Kelley scored on the third error of the inning.
Martin Oil then scored one run in each of the next three frames.
“I think the kids just came in focused tonight,” said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. “We got another outstanding performance on the mound from Trey Mock, who pitched a beautiful ballgame for us. Fortunately, we had Earnie to come in and shut it down.
“Obviously, the errors helped us tonight, because we didn’t hit as well as we have been hitting. Fortunately we were able to take advantage of some of their mistakes. Brian Hostler was outstanding, getting on base four times for us tonight.
“Our defense was outstanding again tonight, and we got enough to get by with the win.”
In the fourth, Justin Miller walked to begin the at-bat, moved to second on Jake Manning’s base on balls and scored when Hostler bunted safely and the ball was thrown away again. Mock doubled down the left field line to lead off the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Miller. Finally, in the sixth, Hostler lined a single to left, stole second and moved up to third on a wild pitch, before Kelley scored him with a sacrifice fly.
Mock scattered two runs on six hits through the first five innings, before running into some trouble in the sixth. Russell walked and pinch hitter Tyler Simpson doubled to score him. Jordan Saylor singled two batters later to drive in Simpson and force Davis to bring in Kelley, his ace. Kelley struck out Nash and after two walks, got Greenleaf on a comebacker to the mound. In the seventh inning, Kelley struck out the side, around a walk to Russell, to pick up his second save in as many nights.
“We have been telling the kids all year, ‘you have talent, you’re a good ballclub, now you guys have to believe that.’” explained Davis. “We fought with that issue all year long, trying to get their confidence built up. It seemed like the home run Justin Miller hit in the second semifinal game against ReMax provided a spark, and we scored some more runs. It seemed like after that night, it just all came together for them mentally, that they started to believe that they were as good as we tried to tell them. But they still have to go out and play ball, you just can’t go out on the field and expect to win. They are going out, playing with confidence, playing with hustle, giving it everything. Everybody is contributing, and that’s what makes it lots of fun.”
Martin Oil 7 Barkman Oil 4
Barkman Oil -Nash, 1b, 3-1-1; Dick, 2b, 2-1-1; Greenleaf, lf, 3-0-2; Forshey, rf, 0-0-0; Ebersole, dh, 3-0-1; Stiffey, cf, 3-0-0; Russell, p, 2-1-0, Ewart, c, 3-0-1; Simpson, ph, 1-1-1; Snowberger, 3b, 3-0-0; Saylor, ss, 3-0-1.
