The Tyrone Lady Eagles softball team opened the 2005 season on Tuesday at Wingate in a Mountain Athletic Conference Division II contest. The Tyrone girls jumped out in front of their hosts Bald Eagle Area with a run in the top of the first, but the Tyrone bats went silent.
\nKatie Whitby led off the game with a walk for the Lady Eagles, advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a groundout by Hilary McNelis. Whitby, the Eagles senior center field then was able to score on a groundout by Missy Stager.
\nBald Eagle Area came right back with two scores in the bottom of the first and three more in the third, behind some heavy hitting by D. Noll who cracked out a pair of doubles and Weaver who doubled and homered.
\nThe Lady Eagles committed five errors to just one for the winners to make it easier for Bald Eagle Area.
\nMcNelis and Ashley Pennabaker had Tyrone\u2019s only two hits, both singles.
\nBald Eagle Area, the state runnerup last year and returning virtually their entire team, losing only two girls, got out of the gate in 2005 in winning style.
\nGarner limited the Lady Eagles to two hits, striking out six, while walking just one batter.
\nMcNelis struck out two and walked one for the Lady Eagles.
\n\u201cWe threw the ball around too much,\u201d said Tyrone coach Lois Loncher. \u201cThe girls have had very few opportunities to practice outside. They have to learn on the fly. We need to work the bugs out. Without our errors, it would have been a much closer score.\u201d
\nTyrone will entertain Mount Union on Thursday at the Harry Sickler Athletic Complex. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
