A recent public notice in The Daily Herald showed Chicago Rivet Company at the Tyrone Industrial Park had significant industrial user violations in 2004.
\nTim Nulton, of Tyrone Borough\u2019s sewer department and its pre-treatment coordinator, said the violations are not that common.
\n Nulton said the borough has an approved pre-treatment program and he is recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for the coordination of pre-treatment issues in the borough.
\nIn regard to the Chicago Rivet matter, discharge monitoring data indicated the company exceeded their maximum daily limit for copper and zinc for two consecutive months. The public notice said that under EPA\u2019s technical review criteria, Chicago Rivet Company was in significant non-compliance under general pretreatment regulations and permit No. 002-03 issued by the borough.
\nNotice of the violations were issued to Chicago Rivet on May 28 and June 28, 2004. Both of the notices were issued for exceeding permitted daily maximum allowance for copper and zinc.
\nNulton said when the violations occur twice he is required to place a public notice in the newspaper about it. The notice appeared in The Daily Herald on Jan. 25 and Jan. 28, 2005.
\nNulton said he could recall only one other time this had happened in recent years. He said those violations also involved Chicago Rivet in the 1990s. He said the company took steps to remove the problem at the time.
\nNulton said that is the first step in the process. He said if a company continues to be out of compliance it faces fines.
\nChicago Rivet also took steps to come into compliance after last year\u2019s violations. According to the public notice, the company faced no penalties as of the date of the notice.
\nQuestions about the violations were referred to the company\u2019s corporate offices by a local Chicago Rivet representative. Don Long of the corporate office said The Daily Herald\u2019s inquiry had been forwarded to an unidentified company representative who did not return the call by press time today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
