It all started in the first quarter as the Bisons took their only lead of the game with a Ryan Johnson lay-up. This was the only lead Clearfield would see the rest of the game as they were completely taken over by Tyrone’s offensive strike.
Tyrone went on a 9-0 run before Clearfield used a timeout to try and stop the Eagles momentum. Tyrone then scored six straight points to put Tyrone up with a commanding lead, 15-2. With just under thirty seconds to go in the first quarter, Mike Fannin hit a long range three to cut the lead to ten points that gave Clearfield a slight momentum boost. Adam Corle received the inbound pass with :03 to go and hit a leaning prayer from almost 35 feet away to silence the crowd after the first period, 18-5.
Tyrone’s defense was relentless in the first half, running various zones such as a 1-3-1, 2-3, box-on-one and a 3-2 that forced Clearfield to shoot long range shots. The advantage was in Tyrone’s hands as they ran the fast break almost every shot Clearfield missed.
The Eagles were well ahead, but the turnovers in the second quarter almost allowed a comeback in Clearfield’s favor. Tyrone turned the ball over nine times in the first half to Clearfields eight allowing Clearfield to make small runs that inched their way closer to Tyrone’s big lead.
Tyrone was outscored in the second quarter, 14-11, but remained in the lead by 10 at the break. The scoring was spread around among the starters for Tyrone, Kevin Hershberger and Josh Clark led with six a piece going in at the half. Tyrone dominated the boards, allowing few second shots and shot 10 foul shots, four more than the total at Bellefonte Wednesday night.
“We got back to our game,” coach Mike Harris said, “and we took the ball hard inside and attacked the basket. We went to the foul line 48 times tonight. This is a big difference from the game last night with just six. We attacked the basket and kept pushing it to the post, that was what we did tonight.”
After two quarters of play, Tyrone totally took control with a lead of 10 and non-stop foul line action from the fast break Eagle attack. There was no letting up as Tyrone busted off six straight points to start the third, going up 16 in the first two minutes. Clearfield looked tired, only scoring nine third quarter points.
Tad Chamberlain scored six points in the third, leading Tyrone with great post action and complete annihilation under the boards, tearing down rebounds. Tyrone seemed to be back to themselves with the score 41-28 going into the final quarter of play.
Foul shooting was a huge factor in the fourth quarter for Tyrone. Tyrone hit 23-30 from the foul line, which was alone five times the amount the previous night. Only one basket from Tad Chamberlain early in the fourth, 23 came from the foul line, a major role in Tyrone’s game last night.
Hershberger, Corle, and Chamberlain combined 18-20 from the foul line in the fourth which was really an impressive stat and deserve a lot of credit for keeping the Tyrone lead in the fourth. It was a great performance from the foul line on Tyrone’s part, and Clearfield tried to make a comeback by fouling and taking control of any missed foul shots.
“Overall I’m very pleased with how we came out tonight,” Harris said. “We got back to our game and got it done.”
Tyrone took this game all the way back in the first quarter, never letting up throughout the game, winning 66-57 in a foul line spectacular.
Tad Chamberlain and Kevin Hershberger led the way for Tyrone. Chamberlain had 16 and was 4-8 from the foul line. Hershberger scored 14 and was 10-12 from the free throw line. With the win, Tyrone is now 9-4 and look to bump out Lewistown in the MAC race for first on Friday night at Tyrone.
Clearfield’s Tanner Kelly led all Bison scorers with 20, hitting a couple of trey’s and going 6-6 from the foul line.
Saturday’s junior varisty and varsity boys’ basketball games versus Bellefonte at Tyrone has been postponed.
Tyrone 66 Clearfield 57
Tyrone- Wilson 2 7-8 11, Crabtree 2 1-10 5, Hershberger 2 10-12 14, Chamberlain 6 4-8 16, Clark 3 0-0 6, Corle 1 6-6 9, Haney 1 3-4 5.
