Kelley Federation. On Friday night at Vets Field, Martin Oil, the number six seed, played McMullen Furniture, the number three seed. Martin Oil took the early lead and then scored five times in the top of the seventh to post a 9-5 triumph in game one of the best-of-three series.
After finishing the regular season with a 15-9 win over the same McMullen Furniture team on Tuesday, Martin Oil scored once each in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 advantage.
Starting pitcher Andy Brisbin doubled to left when McMullen left fielder Mike Sprouse got a slow jump on his fly ball to open the game. With two out, Catcher Matt Albright hit a clutch single to left to score Brisbin.
In the second, Chris Alley doubled to begin the frame and was sacrificed to third by Dustin Harris. With two out, Brisbin scored on a McMullen error.
McMullen Furniture put a pair of unearned runs on the board in the bottom of the third. Taylor Miller was hit by a pitch and scored on an error on a grounder from Mike Weyandt and Jake Settle singled home Weyandt to tie the game.
The score changed hands in the fifth, with each team taking the lead to set the stage for the martin Oil seventh.
In the top of the fifth, Ryan Kenawell was safe on an infield hit, but was thrown out trying to steal. Matt Plummer also beat out a infield single. Plummer stole second and came home on a double by Albright. Cubby McCartney singled Albright to third and Kyle Drost scored him with a sac fly.
McMullen Furniture took a 5-4 lead when Weyandt doubled in two runs and scored himself on a wild pitch.
Trailing by a run with just three outs left, Martin Oil took advantage of three infield errors to put the game away.
Plummer was safe on an error, Albright flied out on a 3-0 count and McCartney was also safe on an error. Drost was safe on the third miscue of the inning with Plummer scoring. Chris Alley and Dustin Harris belted back-to-back triples with Alley’s three-bagger scoring McCartney and Drost and Harris sending courtesy runner Chris McDaniel home.
“I can’t say enough about the kids tonight,” said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. “We were up 4-2, McMullen came back and went ahead 5-4 going to the top of the seventh. Matty Plummer hustled out an error to reach base and stole second. That just seemed to get us going. We just kept hitting the ball and hitting the ball and running.
Alley pitched the final two innings for Martin Oil to pick up the win, allowing no runs on two hits, with one strikeout and one walk. Brisbin tossed the first five frames, giving up five runs, three earned on five hits striking out one and walking one.
“Andy Brisbin pitched a heck-of-a-ballgame for the first five innings for us,” explained Davis. “That kept us in the ballgame. Then Chris Alley came in and slammed the door in the sixth and seventh. We couldn’t have asked for anything better, as far as the pitching was concerned.”
Brisbin also led the offensive attack with three hits, including a pair of doubles and Albright, McCartney and Alley each had two base hits.
“Our hitting was a lot more timely tonight,” said Davis. “We had a couple key two-out hits, that were just unbelievable that kept us going. Andy Brisbin not only pitched great game, he had three hits and a couple doubles. Matt Albright had a couple hits, a couple RBI. Ryan McCartney had a couple hits tonight. Chris Alley had a big triple and a big double. Dustin Harris looked really bad his first couple at bats, but came through with a big triple in the seventh inning.”
The best-of-three series continues tonight at 8 p.m. at Vets Field with Martin Oil serving as the home team. If a third game is needed, the two teams will play Sunday evening at 5 p.m. at Vets.
Vets Field, 5 p.m. Game One
Martin Oil 9 McMullen Furniture 5
MARTIN OIL – Brisbin, p-2b, 5-1-3; McDaniel, cr, 0-0-0; Kenawell, lf, 5-0-1; Mat.
