For nineteen years the Tyrone Regional Arts Council has provided area residents the opportunity to experience the visual arts through exhibits by local artists in The Gallery.
\nThe featured artist for this month studied at Notre Dame, has been part of exhibits in Washington, DC, Martha\\’s Vineyard, and Philadelphia and is a member of five professional organizations.
\nPeter Frantz\\’s interest in art was truly a family affair. His grandfather was a painter and musician as well as an engineer. Peter is one of 30 talented family members spanning three generations who are involved in the arts.
\nMr. Frantz commented, \u201cThe artistic accomplishments in our family not only represent a natural talent, but also an atmosphere created within our family of positive reinforcement and encouragement.\u201d
\nAfter graduating from high school, this Tyrone native attended the University of Notre Dame, earning a degree in Design and Fine Arts. While attending Notre Dame, Peter studied at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont, where he learned the art of glass blowing. This began his interest in three dimensional art.
\nAs a post graduate, Mr. Frantz continued his studies at Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture in Princeton, Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford, and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
\nUpon his return to the area, Peter Frantz created his Sinking Valley studio where he currently creates new works. Although Peter paints, his main interest is in sculpture.
\n\u201cI really have a better feel for items created in 3D. Being able to visualize a subject in 3D makes sculpture that much easier to create,\u201d said Frantz.
\nThe current exhibit contains a single sculpture titled \u201cGreenspan Cola\u201d. The piece was created for an exhibit at the Federal Reserve Bank in Philadelphia and is constructed of steel and paper mache.
\n\u201cThe work is a tribute to Alan Greenspan using the Coca Cola insignia as a basis for the sculpture, which adds to the light-hearted humor of the piece.\u201d
\nThe Gallery is located on Pennsylvania Avenue adjacent to Central Distributors. The current exhibit will run through July and may be viewed at any hour through the Gallery window.
\nThe Gallery program is sponsored by a grant from the PA Council on the Arts, a state agency, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and Tyrone Borough.
