Low bidder Manno Construction Inc. of Ridgway has been awarded the contract for the Schell Run repair project due to get underway later this spring and be completed by the end of June.
\nThe project is designed to repair erosion along the banks of Schell Run, which is located near the running track owned by the Tyrone Area School District. The decision to award the bid was made at a special Tyrone Borough council meeting Monday night.
\n\u201cFive council members were at the special meeting along with myself,\u201d said Nathan George, Tyrone Borough manager.
\nVice president of the council Jeffrey Watson, Jr. presided over the meeting because of the absence of Mayor Patricia Stoner due to illness. The mayor also missed the two regularly scheduled meetings in April.
\nThe winning bid by Manno Construction was for $28,935. Bids from two other companies were also received by the borough. Borex Inc. of Altoona bid $29,292. The other bid was in the amount of $62,004.75 submitted by Haranin Construction of Lock Haven.
\nEarlier this year, the borough and the district entered a plan to share the cost and the work involved in the project. The agreement called for the borough to prepare the plans and specifications and deal with the bidding process.
\nThe borough is expected to pay about $17,000 for its share while the school district will have to pay the remaining $23,000 of the $40,000 project.
\nThe school district also came up with a plan to reduce the cost of the project by several thousand dollars by agreeing to contribute local material for fill required for the project.
\nThe project has been delayed a number of times including when the Tyrone Area School District applied for DEP money through different programs and did not receive any funding. The two entities had been in disagreement over which one was responsible for the repairs but did apply for grant money together and eventually came to the recent agreement in February.
\nThe district has been delaying repair work on its track awaiting the repairs in the Schell Run area. The district wants the erosion repair project completed during a short time frame coinciding with the end of the school year and the end of June. This would allow the district to complete its track repairs in time for the 2004-05 school year. The district\u2019s physical plant manager, Tom Muir, explained exactly what is expected to take place.
\n\u201cWork on the track by our contractor will begin right after the end of the school year,\u201d said Muir. \u201cThe type of work they\u2019ll be doing shouldn\u2019t interfere with the borough\u2019s contractor who\u2019ll be working on the Schell Run project. The track work should be completed by August 5.\u201d
\nIn other business at Monday\u2019s meeting, council asked George to inform Joshua House officials to consider finding off street space in addition to the streets it has previously used for its3-on-3 basketball tournament scheduled for this July.
\nCouncil is also looking to preparing a proclamation in appreciation of the nation\u2019s soldiers. George explained the proclamation in its final form would have to be presented to council at a later meeting for passage by motion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
