With the ball coming from Barkman Oil catcher John Ewart, Martin Oil outfielder Jimmy Watters (15) swipes second base in the fourth inning at Martinsburg on Tuesday evening. Although Watters enjoyed a perfect night with a single, double and walk, driving in one run and scoring one, Martin Oil dropped a 12-3 decision. In the third battle of the oil sponsors, Martin Oil and Barkman Oil punched and rolled each other around for the opening two innings. Martin Oil opened the game with a run in the top of the first, Barkman Oil scored two to take a 2-1 lead. Martin Oil tied the score and went into a 3-2 lead in the second, only to have Barkman score three to jump into a 5-3 advantage.
\nUnfortunately at that point, Martin Oil was put to sleep by Barkman Oil pitcher Tyler Nash, who limited Martin Oil to just three harmless singles over the final seven innings.
\nIn the meantime, Barkman Oil kept on building their score higher, with two more in the third, three in the fifth and two in the sixth. Martin Oil proved to be their own worst enemy, in the later innings, committing four errors that led to the final five Barkman runs being unearned.
\nJake Manning led off the game by stroking a single to center. Manning stole second base and scored on an Earnie Kelley single. In the second inning, Martin Oil starting pitcher Chad Coho smacked a double. With one out, Jimmy Watters doubled to right to score courtesy runner Jared Coho and Matt Hinton belted a double to left to get Watters home.
\nAlthough Nash was in trouble in every inning, he was able to keep Martin Oil from scoring for the remainder of the ballgame. He walked C. Coho in the third, Watters in the fourth, hit Trey Mock and allowed a single to Cameron Irvin in the fifth, gave up a single to Watters in the sixth and a single to Nate Gray and walk to Adam Kovac in the seventh, but Martin Oil never got a runner to third following the second inning.
\n\u201cWe had 10 hits and four walks, so we certainly had our chances,\u201d said Martin Oil manager Ed Davis. \u201cBut we just weren\u2019t able to pull the trigger, to get the clutch base hit that would have started us scoring again. We had too many mistakes and errors.
\n\u201cWe will just have to rest up and try to start all over again for the playoffs on Friday.\u201d
\nCody Stiffey and Jake Russell hit home runs for Barkman Oil, and Stiffey, Nash and Nate Dick each had a pair of hits, and Jared Snowberger had three hits and a pair of RBI.
\nMartin Oil (13-9) will play Tyrone Legion (10-12) at Vets Field on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the first of a best-of-three first round game.
