{"id":44951,"date":"2004-03-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-03-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/v3\/?p="},"modified":"2004-03-09T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2004-03-09T00:00:00","slug":"\u2018Fool\u2019s-Gold\u2019-causes-halt-in-Interstate-99-earthmoving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/?p=44951","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Fool\u2019s Gold\u2019 causes halt in Interstate 99 earthmoving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An important road project for Tyrone commuters who head to State College to work has been halted, after PENNDOT yesterday formerly called for work to stop in Patton Township.<br \/>\nAccording to Marla Fannin, a community relations director with PENNDOT, although earthmoving work has stopped, bridge work will continue along the new stretch of highway until a permanent solution to an acid rock drainage problem can be corrected.<br \/>\n\u201cDuring excavation, we came across a larger amount of acidic material (Fool\u2019s Gold) than we expected,\u201d said Fannin, noting the find occurred in what is known as the \u201cSkytop\u201d area.<br \/>\nShe said Fool\u2019s Gold, in itself, is not acidic and doesn\u2019t pose a threat to the local environment; however, when it\u2019s exposed to oxygen then passed through water, an acid is formed that increases the Ph in affected water tables.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re in the process of putting together a plan for DEP (state Department of Environmental Protection) to review,\u201d said Fannin.<br \/>\n\u201cRight now, the groups affected (PENNDOT, DEP, the state Fish and Boat Commission and Patton Township) are holding regular meetings to keep everyone up to speed as to where everything stands. Testing is on-going and we\u2019re determined to find where the roots of the problems are.\u201d<br \/>\nFannin said a permanent plan for DEP approval is due by early may.<br \/>\nFannin said the timeline for the project will most likely be affected after the permanent plan is put together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An important road project for Tyrone commuters who head to State College to work has been halted, after PENNDOT yesterday formerly called for work to stop in Patton Township.
