Charlene Hand is the most recent recipient of Tyrone Hospital\u2019s Extra Mile Employee Award.
\nTyrone Hospital grants the award on a quarterly basis to an employee who demonstrates exceptional performance. Hand is a pharmacy technician and also a phlebotomist.
\nHand is a life-long resident of Tyrone and currently resides with her husband, Bernie.
\nShe joined Tyrone Hospital in June of 1989 and worked in the hospital\u2019s laboratory for a number of years as a phlebotomist. In 1999, she moved to the hospital\u2019s pharmacy where she is currently employed as a pharmacy technician.
\nRecently, Hand volunteered her time for a special project to benefit fellow co-workers. She reorganized an employee library that was established many years ago by a hospital employee. The casual lending library is a way for hospital employees to share books with co-workers.
\nHand said she was very surprised to learn she was the Extra Mile Employee Award recipient.
\n\u201cI am honored to be recognized by co-workers,\u201d said Hand. \u201cI love working at Tyrone Hospital. It is very family oriented and very caring.\u201d
\n\u201cThe Extra Mile Employee Award is special because it is driven by hospital employees,\u201d said Walter S. Van Dyke, interim Chief Executive Officer at Tyrone Hospital. \u201cIt is an honor to recognize employees like Mrs. Hand who have been singled out by their co-workers and recognized for exceptional performance.\u201d
\nRecipients of the Extra Mile Employee Award receive a commemorative plaque, an extra paid personal holiday, and a letter of commendation for the hospital\u2019s chief executive officer.
\nThe Tyrone Hospital is celebrating 50 years of existence this year and a number of special events are planned leading up to the actual celebration date in September.
\nEarlier this year, the hospital opened a contest to all employees to seek a slogan for the celebration. When it all shook out, \u201cCelebrating 50 Years: A Small Hospital with a Big Heart\u201d was selected.
\nIn Saturday\u2019s edition of The Daily Herald, hospital marketing director Theresa Yanchetz helped readers explore the roots of the hospital and the key people who worked hard to bring a healthcare facility to Tyrone.
