Epworth Manor recently announced the next AARP driver safety class for individuals ages 50 and older, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday, February 23 and 24.
\nIndividuals 55 years old or older who complete the eight-hour course are eligible for a state-mandated minimum of a five percent discount on their auto insurance for a three-year period.
\nIf there are two or more individuals age 55 or older on an automobile policy, all must take the course to be eligible for the discount.
\nA $10 fee per participant is required to cover student materials and handouts. Checks or money orders should be made payable to AARP. All participants must be preregistered and prepaid to attend this class.
\nAARP membership is not required. Early registration and payment is encouraged to reserve a seat since class size is limited.

\nAccording to AARP volunteer driver safety instructor, Larry Hainley, this course is being offered at Epworth Manor, 925 S. Lincoln Ave., Tyrone, at 9 a.m. on the fourth Monday and Tuesday of every month through October and on Monday and Tuesday, December 6 and 7 as a community service for seniors residing in and around the Tyrone area.
\n\u201cIndividuals who either work normal weekday schedules or have other commitments that prevent them from attending a weekday class have two other options to consider,\u201d added Hainley.
\nFirst, a night class starting at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday and Wednesday of every month is scheduled at Altoona Hospital Priority Care, 620 Howard Avenue, Altoona. Contact Dana Shade at 949-3123 to register for these classes.
\nAlso, a Saturday one-day class starting at 8 a.m. on the second Saturday of every month is scheduled at Blair Senior Services, 1320 12th Avenue, Altoona. Contact Maureen Adams at 946-1235, ext. 242 to register for these classes.
\nAARP developed the eight-hour classroom refresher course to help older drivers improve their driving skills and prevent crashes.
\nThe course covers age-related physical changes in perception and reaction time, rules of the road, changes in state law, and local driving problems, among other topics.
