In 1978, Reverend Norman Huff initiated Lenten breakfasts for area youth at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Tyrone.
\nThis year, Rev. Huff and all involved are celebrating 25 years of youth Lenten breakfasts at the church.
\n\u201cThe purpose is to help the kids realize it\u2019s a time of preparation for Easter and the hope that God has given to us through his son, Jesus,\u201d Rev. Huff told the Daily Herald in a recent interview.
\nHe said a highlight of the breakfasts is that it brings kids from all denominations together to celebrate a special season.
\nThe first breakfast was held last week on Ash Wednesday, and volunteer Mary Michaels said about 30 kids attended. Michaels said she expects more kids to attend the breakfasts as the word spreads about them.
\nSix more breakfasts are planned, one for every Wednesday morning in March, and the last breakfast is scheduled for April 7.
\nThe breakfasts are scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. This way kids can attend the breakfasts and still make it to school on time.
\nArea youth interested in attending are asked to call the church the Monday before to RSVP for the week\u2019s scheduled breakfast, but it is not necessary.
\nRev. Huff said the menu for the breakfasts vary every week, with everything from home fries to pancakes to eggs and bacon.
\nThis year, the breakfast committee is asking for volunteers from area churches to come in to help prepare the breakfasts as well. If anyone is interested, contact Rev. Huff or Mrs. Michaels.
\nAlso, the breakfasts are provided to the youth at no cost. Because of this, the breakfast committee will accept donations to be used for the breakfasts from area organizations and individuals.
