Tickets for the annual Tyrone-Snyder Public Library fundraising concert are on sale in area outlets today.
\nAccording to Chuck Banas, the library board\u2019s vice president, tickets for the April 17 concert featuring The Vogues are $25 each. They can be picked up at a number of outlets, including the Altoona Library, Joybeans, Kopp Drug, Bressler Food Mart and Sports, Med-Center Pharmacy, Healthy Alternatives or from any library board member.
\nBanas said pre-sales of the tickets were well received, noting Friday morning that a total of 492 tickets have already been sold.
\n\u201cThe price is right and it\u2019s definitely for a good cause,\u201d said Banas. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a family-oriented show that everyone can enjoy.\u201d
\nFormed in 1960, The Vogues were a four man vocal group from Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania. Originally calling themselves \u201cThe Val-Airs,\u201d they changed their name when they were signed to the tiny Co & Ce label.
\nIn 1965 they released a song called \u201cYou\\’re The One,\u201d that quickly rose to the number 4 position on Billboard\\’s Hot 100.
\nThe group\\’s second effort, \u201cFive O\\’clock World\u201d continued the rock-folk sound and also reached number 4. This tune enjoyed a revival of sorts, when it was used as the theme to \u2018The Drew Carey Show\u2019 in the late 90\\’s.
\nThe group\\’s next attempts, \u201cMagic Town\u201d and \u201cThe Land Of Milk and Honey\u201d were not quite as successful, but still managed to edge into the top 40 in 1966.
\nFor the next few years, The Vogues clean cut, harmony group image was out of step with the rock and roll scene and it wasn\\’t until they signed with Reprise Records in 1968 that they reached the charts again with a middle of the road ballad called \u201cTurn Around, Look At Me.\u201d
\nDespite sharing radio air time with increasingly harder rock, the song still managed to hit number 7 and sell over a million copies.
\nStaying with the lighter, more sophisticated style they loved best, The Vogues kept the hits coming when they took a cover of a 1957 Bobby Helms hit, \\”My Special Angel\\” into the Top 10 in September 1968.
\nAs they toured the club circuit, the group had two more songs reach the Top 40, \u201cTill\u201d and \u201cNo, Not Much.\u201d
\nIn addition to The Vogues, Banas said those attending will see a familiar face if they attended the last concert sponsored by the library board.
\n\u201cEverybody kept asking if she was coming back,\u201d he said.
\n\u201cWe were totally happy when we got word that she could make it.\u201d
\nOf course, Banas was talking about 10-year-old Vanessa Campagna, who rocked the high school auditorium last year to two standing ovations.
\nCampagna was a runner-up in last season\u2019s CBS presentation of Star Search.
\nSomething new to this year\u2019s event will be a comedy aspects.
\nBanas said Robbie Wise, a stand-up comic who has appeared all over the United States, is scheduled to perform.
\n\u201cThis will be comedy that\u2019s appropriate for all ages,\u201d said Banas.
