The many musically and academically talented students of the Tyrone Area School District will be honored through the formation of the Tyrone Chapter of Tri-M Music Honor Society. Tri-M is a program sponsored by the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) that is designed to recognize and motivate the finest music students in schools for their accomplishments in both music and academics.
\nRecently band director Kris Laird applied for and received a grant from the Tyrone Renaissance Education Foundation (TREF) to get the new Tyrone Chapter started. The $200 grant from TREF will pay for the new chapter fees, induction ceremony materials and refreshments for the induction ceremony to be held Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.
\nTogether with the grant, the music department of Tyrone High School will recognize the musical and academic achievements of more than 35 Tyrone students as they are inducted into the chapter of this National Music Honor Society.
\nThe event will be held in the high school auditorium and will feature a featuring guest speaker, Dr. Jerry Zolten. Light refreshments will be served afterwards.
\nThe Tyrone Chapter will join the 4,100 chapters and more than 24,000 members nationally in recognizing the talents of high school music students. Selection of members is based on character strength and academic and musical achievement. Tri-M Honor students must be enrolled in a school-sponsored music ensemble and\/or class for at least one semester, maintain at least a B average in music and a B average (3.0) in other academic subjects, and have demonstrated leadership, service, and character in their activities.
\nOther benefits of Tri-M Honor Society is the added recognition to the school music program\u2019s accomplishments, student\/community involvement through honor society sponsored service activities, increased cooperation, cohesiveness, and leadership within the school music programs, faculty, administration and community.
\nTri-M members have the opportunity to be recognized for their accomplishments through various awards sponsored by the national and local chapter and senior members are recognized with diploma seals, graduation tassels and cords at their graduation ceremony. Tri-M also offers music career planning materials for students who plan to continue in the music field after high school, student newsletters, and a connection with other chapter members through national and chapter Tri-M websites.
\nThis new Tri-M Honor Society will increase the awareness of the many talented students we have here in the Tyrone School District throughout the Tyrone community and surrounding area, at the same time as recognizing their individual and group accomplishments.
