Dozens braved the cruel, cold touch of Mother Nature last evening to attend the third annual Tree of Light ceremony at the Tyrone Hospital.
\nThe Tree of Light is a fundraising project sponsored annually by the Tyrone Hospital Development Council. This year, all proceeds from the event will be used to purchase a much-needed infant resuscitation bed for the Tyrone Area Hospital.
\nRandy Miles Sr., chairman of the council, welcomed the group and offered remarks regarding the event. He explained how well the community has grabbed a hold of the project and thanked it for its continued support of THDC and how it has helped make capital improvements at the hospital.
\n\u201cThe Tree of Light campaign is a symbol of hope and anticipation in the community,\u201d said Miles. \u201cWe\u2019re very fortunate to have the people that we do have in this community. They care about their hospital.\u201d
\nMiles took time to offer words of thanks to everyone who participated in the event, including THDC members, the Tyrone Key Club, who this year, sold special candles for the event, and Richard and Ann Searer for their donation of a Christmas tree for inside the hospital lobby.
\nFollowing Miles\u2019 brief talk, local resident Peter Hedberg offered two songs to the group \u2013 \u201cWe Three Kings\u201d and \u201cO Holy Night.\u201d
\nThe featured speaker was interim Chief Executive Officer Walter VanDyke. His brief speech included thanks to all who participated, especially noting how the community supported the project despite all the other fundraising efforts currently working in northern Blair County.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s the community that has allowed us to do something that we couldn\u2019t do otherwise,\u201d said VanDyke. \u201cAll the effort truly validates the services being provided here at Tyrone Hospital.\u201d
\nPastor TerryAnn Talbot-Moses, president of the Tyrone Area Cooperative Ministries, then reflected on the recent power outages in Tyrone and tied that in with how important light is and that sometimes, we take having light for granted.
