Ten of 12 Tyrone Area High School band students qualified for the upcoming District Six Band Festival which will be held in February of next year.
\nAuditions for the event were held on Sunday at Tussey Mountain High School in Saxton. Students from grades 10, 11 and 12 were chosen to prepare solos for the auditions on Sunday. Ten students were picked based on their performance to advance to the February event. The advancing students will now receive music to prepare for the district concert next year.
\nChris Laird, band director for Tyrone Area, highlighted the students who where chosen after the audition. They are, Wendi Taylor, fourth chair flute; Gene Keller, third chair oboe; Alicia Rodriguez, ninth chair clarinet; Doug Conrad, third chair tenor sax; Joe Houck, third chair horn; Zack Zolten, eighth chair trombone; Elizabeth Kreckel, seventh chair trombone; Zac Yeaton, eighth chair euphonium; Morris Reese, 15th chair tuba; and Rob Rich, eighth chair percussion.
\nThe district event will be held February 11-14, 2003 at Northern Cambria High School. Tyrone students could then advance to regional and state events depending on how their performance is judged at the district event.
\nLaird also wanted to highlight two students that will represent Tyrone at an event next month in Indiana. Zac Yeaton will perform at the honors band concert on the IUP campus. Yeaton will be third chair euphonium.
\nAlso appearing at the IUP event will be Morris Reese, who occupies the third chair tuba position. The honors band concert will take place on Sunday, Dec. 14.
\n\u201cWe take a little break until after the Christmas holidays,\u201d said Laird when asked about other upcoming events high school band will be involved with in the coming months.
\nHe did indicate there are a number of chorale and chorus related events coming in mid-December. The Tyrone Middle School chorale concert will be held Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
\nThe elementary chorus and band concert is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. at the high school auditorium. The pre-Christmas events will conclude with the high school chorale concert. That event will be held on Sunday Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
\nSelected members of the school chorus are also active this week. They are appearing at The Blair County Senior High School Chorus Festival tonight.
\nRehearsals were held yesterday and today with the performance scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m. at the Altoona Area High School. The cost of admission is $3.
