{"id":45499,"date":"2003-10-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-10-27T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/v3\/?p="},"modified":"2003-10-27T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2003-10-27T00:00:00","slug":"Tyrone-Eagle-Scout-wins-Presidential-Environmental-Youth-Award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/?p=45499","title":{"rendered":"Tyrone Eagle Scout wins Presidential Environmental Youth Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Padraig Sean Flynn of Tyrone was one of 10 recipients to win the President\u2019s Environmental Youth award at a ceremony Tuesday in Washington, D.C.<br \/>\nFlynn\u2019s Eagle Scout project at the Bellwood-Antis Wetlands Education Center was chosen for its positive contribution to environmental education in his community, which is located in EPA\u2019S mid-Atlantic Region 3.<br \/>\nThe projects honored this year include restoring watersheds, tree planting programs, environmental cleanup, preserving the environment, construction of a wetlands path and observation deck, restoration of a nature trail and native plants, building homes for wildlife, environmental photos, and environmental service projects.<br \/>\nPresidential Environmental Youth Awards have been presented by the White House and EPA since 1971. Up to 10 winning projects are selected each year from EPA\u2019s 10 regions.<br \/>\nYoung people from around the country and U.S. territories are invited annually to participate in the program, which is aimed at encouraging individuals, school classes, summer camps, youth organizations and public interest groups to promote environmental awareness and positive community involvement.<br \/>\n\u201cThis event reminds me of my own childhood, and my early involvement in the environment,\u201d said EPA acting administrator Marianne Horinko.<br \/>\n \u201cWhen I was in high school, I was part of a state-wide project that enlisted schools to collect water quality data. As I stoop shin-deep in the neighborhood stream, sampling for suspended solids and biological oxygen demand, I remember feeling connected to a larger and more important purpose; protecting the environment.\u201d<br \/>\nThe PEYA for contest year 2002 were presented by Horinko to the following: Documentary On Recycling &#038; Waste-To-Energy Plant, Webelos Park 92 Eagle Patrol, Ashford, Conn. \u2013 Reg. 1; Loving My Environment, Samuel Iva\u2019s Alejandro Rivera, Fajardo, Puerto Rico \u2013 Reg. 2; Bellwood-Antis Wetlands Education Center \u2013 An Eagle Scout Project, Padraig Sean Flynn, Tyrone, Pa. \u2013 Reg. 3; The Roots and Shoots Club, Eva Nyerges, Danville High School, Danville, Ky. \u2013 Reg. 4; A Home for Wildlife, Nicholas F.
