Three years ago, a pastor in a State College church thought that providing children and families with a Christian alternative to \u201cnormal\u201d Halloween-like activities would be a great idea.
\nHe was right. And ever since, the Light The Night event has caught on in communities all over the United States.
\nLight The Night activities here in Tyrone are scheduled from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, at the home of Shelby Shaffer, 2114 Columbia Avenue. Following the activities, there is a youth rally scheduled until 9 p.m.
\n\u201cWe\u2019re excited about the program and we\u2019re looking for a good turnout,\u201d said Shaffer, the organizer of the local event. \u201cWe got onboard in 2001 and we\u2019ve seen more people come each year.\u201d
\nAccording to Shaffer, in 2001, event planners gave out 120 candy bags to those who attended. Last year, 175 bags of candy were distributed.
\n\u201cThis year, we\u2019re going to prepare between 200 and 225 bags,\u201d she said, noting her son Jared helps with the candy bags.
\nShaffer said the goal is to get the community more involved. She said she is being helped by seven northern Blair County churches: The Church of the Good Shepherd, the Community Worship Center, Rock of Ages Church, Grazierville and Bald Eagle United Methodist churches, Questhaven and the Church of the Brethren.
\nAccording to Shaffer, those who attend Light The Night are sure to have a good time. She said there are plenty of games to play and door prizes. Also, Shaffer said the business community of Tyrone has provided plenty of donations of food and prizes.
\nDirectly after the Light The Night, there will be a youth rally. George Bell is the guest speaker and music will be provided by Zion\u2019s Gate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
