Cooperation amongst a school district, the community that surrounds it and the businesses contained within can lead to impressive projects.
\nThe case in point is the White Township Recreational Parks Keystone Rehab Field in Indiana County. This is where the 2003 Bellwood-Antis Blue Devils defeated Chartiers-Houston 7-5 on June 9 in the PIAA Class A western final to earn its second-ever birth in a state final championship game, which it won to claim its first-ever state championship.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a marvelous facility,\u201d said B-A Superintendent Rodney Kuhns. \u201cI was very much impressed with it and hope that someday, the district here can work with this community and its businesses to bring something like that to Bellwood.\u201d
\nOn July 23, a number of school officials will trek to Indiana County to take a look at the facility and talk with those who helped put that project together.
\n\u201cWe just want to show the board how another township and various organizations work together to put a project like that together,\u201d said Kuhns. \u201cIt takes a lot of work and cooperation, but the end result is fabulous.\u201d
\nKuhns visited the site himself when the Blue Devil hardballers played on June 9. He was so impressed that he immediately brought the idea back to the district\u2019s board of directors.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a very nice project and it looks like it was well thought out,\u201d said Kuhns. \u201cWe want to go up and find out how they did it.\u201d
\nThose going include Kuhns, four members of the board, park and recreation representatives from Antis Township, an architect and others involved in the administration at Bellwood-Antis. Also, the incoming superintendent of school, G. Brian Toth, who will replace Kuhns in August, will attend.
\nAccording to Kuhns, the facility, which includes numerous ball fields and supporting fields, concession areas, restroom facilities and a \u201cwall of fame,\u201d proclaiming all those involved in the project, was, to his knowledge, funded through state and federal grant money.
\nShould the district decide to build such a facility, there is already space set aside for it.
\nIn 2001, Kimbal and Associates conducted a campus study plan discovering the district was in need of additional athletic fields and facilities. The district purchased a 20-acre tract of land adjacent to Old Route 220 and in walking distance from the school\u2019s campus.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a heavily wooded area and would need cleared,\u201d said Kuhns, \u201cbut it\u2019s a perfect place for a facility such as this.\u201d
\nKuhns said the district has right-of-ways that will lead to the property.
