{"id":46574,"date":"2003-05-28T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-05-28T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/v3\/?p="},"modified":"2003-05-28T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2003-05-28T00:00:00","slug":"Summer-activities-start-this-weekend-at-Greenwood-Furnace-State-Park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/?p=46574","title":{"rendered":"Summer activities start this weekend at Greenwood Furnace State Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those people who enjoy the outdoors, Greenwood Furnace State Park, located north of Huntingdon, has scheduled the first of its summer activities for this weekend, Friday, May 30, Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1.<br \/>\nThe State Park which was first built in the 1930s Depression era is featuring some new facilities, including a beach building with bathrooms and new office buildings.<br \/>\nThe weekend\u2019s activities are free and open to the public. Camp sites and pavilions are available, and reservations are required for these. Call the park for information and scheduling at 667-1805.<br \/>\nTo start the weekend festivities, Friday, May 30 at 8:30 p.m. a campground movie is scheduled to be shown at the campground amphitheater.<br \/>\nSaturday, May 31 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. is a continuous demonstration of pottery-making in the Blacksmith Shop at the \u201cold\u201d Visitor Center.<br \/>\nThe pottery-making demonstration will highlight guest presenter Nancy Miller as she makes various pots. Miller is well-known for her traditional methods of pottery-making, from gathering local clays, to forming pots with a kick-wheel, and then firing in an earthen kiln.<br \/>\nSaturday at 3:30 p.m. Down the Village Road: A Guided Walk of Greenwood Furnace is scheduled, and the tour will meet to begin at the Blacksmith Shop.<br \/>\nIronmaster John A. Wright will lead the walk and talk about the life of ironmaking villages.<br \/>\nSaturday at 8 p.m. Snakes Alive: Poisonous Snakes in PA is scheduled in the Blacksmith Shop.<br \/>\nSpecial guest speaker Greg Line will talk about Pennsylvania\u2019s snakes, and the program will include live specimens.<br \/>\nOn Sunday, June 1 the activities begin at 11:30 a.m. with The Teamsters scheduled at the Blacksmith Shop.<br \/>\nThis informative discussion will focus on the teamsters who got their name from the teams of horses that drew their wagons. The teamsters were important to keeping the furnace alive. This mode of transportation was used to haul materials to the furnace and the finished product to the forges.<br \/>\nSunday at 2 p.m. The Great Awakening is scheduled at the Greenwood Furnace Church.<br \/>\nDiscover the role religion played in the workers\u2019 lives during the furnace days and enjoy a tour of the historic church.<br \/>\nSunday at 3:30 p.m. is Living on a Dollar Day scheduled at the Blacksmith Shop.<br \/>\nThe discussion is the 19th century stores that were available to the workers of the furnace. Charges were deducted right from the workers\u2019 paychecks, and the store was run by the Iron Furnace management.<br \/>\nFuture activities for summer are planned for Greenwood Furnace State Park. A notable week is Old Home Days scheduled for the second week in August.
