There will be at least a dozen local merchants with booths displaying their wares and services at Tyrone Business Expo 2003, scheduled for May 15 at the Bull Pen restaurant.
\nOrganizers of the now annual event say the concept will allow the owners of Tyrone businesses to network amongst themselves and with the customers that walk through their doors everyday.
\n\u201cWe\u2019re really excited this year,\u201d said Cate Fraser, incoming vice-president of the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce. \u201cWe have a good deal of diverse merchants attending and we\u2019re hoping to add a few more.\u201d
\nAccording to Fraser, already, 15 businesses have committed to the function, which is scheduled from 1-7 p.m. in the banquet facility. She hopes at least seven or eight more will sign on.
\n\u201cThis is really a place to showcase their products and have dialogue and networking with other business owners,\u201d said Fraser. \u201cIt\u2019s always hard to measure what works by yourself.\u201d
\nAt the Expo, merchants will set up booths displaying their product and will have representatives on hand to answer any questions, explain how something works, or just to chit-chat about when the next train will pass by.
\nNew this year will be a scavenger hunt sponsored by First Commonwealth Bank and Omega Bank. At each booth at the Expo, hunters will need to pick up a clue. The winner will be awarded a First Commonwealth sponsored DVD player and a $100 debit card sponsored by Omega Bank.
\nThis is the third year of the Tyrone Business Expo. The first one, in 2001, drew more than 30 merchants. Last year\u2019s number was down a little because of the accident that occurred at Albermarle Co.
\nBooths are still available and can be obtained by calling the TACC at 684-0736 or stopping at the office, located at 1004 Logan Ave., Tyrone.
\nAttendance to the public is free.
\nEarly in 1916, a group of Tyrone businessmen met and discussed the need for an organization devoted to community service, economic progress and cultural growth. This led to the establishment of the Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce, Inc., on July 16, 1916.
\nRevenue for the Chamber\u2019s work is provided by membership dues, Business After Hours and other fundraisers. Membership enrollment currently stands at 133 members.
\nBonnie Patton accepted the position of secretary on June 1, 1996 and was later promoted to executive director, a position she still holds.
\nIts accomplishments have been varied, interesting and very productive. It is a motivating force behind the annual Christmas Train Ride and the downtown Christmas lighting project.
