What a great success! Thanks again to everyone who donated money for this great cause. And thanks to Debbie Lowder, Honey Wilson and Cary Simpson for allowing The Daily Herald to be a part of this local project. It’s great when both media in town work together. I love it when a plan comes together!
I bumped into Bill Dann at Burger King yesterday. He was in town again to drop off a preview of his latest radio show entitled “An American Tribute,” this ultimate patriotic presentation will feature a one hour preview tomorrow on 1340 WTRN radio. The main show will air on Monday, May 26 from noon until 4 p.m. Look for a feature story including rare song titles in an upcoming Daily Herald.
A cattle call? As The Daily Herald is making phone calls to candidates for our special local candidates night, one of them running for council has refused, saying he won’t be part of a cattle call. “Cattle Call” should be the name of a weekly column that I give him so we can avoid his letters to the editor. If you can’t address the people for two minutes with your ideas, you should have no part in running for office.
It was a volunteer appreciation tea at Joybeans yesterday from 2-4 p.m. put on by the Tyrone-Snyder Public Library. It’s a nice way to say thanks to those that give their time.
I want the new Daily Herald building to be one of the nicest looking buildings in downtown Tyrone. With this goal in mind our friends at Cornerstone Builders will be custom painting the front including the windows of our office building in colors to match the welcome to Tyrone signs that grace the community when you enter. Then a new carved sign with matching colors will be made and placed above our main window. Look for this to be completed this summer.
Published author and motivational speaker Judith Kaye will make a presentation and hold a book signing at the Tyrone-Snyder Public Library on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m. Judith Eckroth is her maiden name and she is a 1960 graduate of Tyrone High School. A portion of her profits from the sale of her latest book “Pieces of a Life” will be donated to the library.
It appears that the response to Tyrone’s official website www.tyronepa.com has picked up. It’s great to go to the site and see more people posting their thoughts on the community discussion boards. Let’s make this a place where we can post our ideas and complaints to share with others who may agree or disagree.
In tomorrow’s Daily Herald is the largest “Spring Home Improvement” edition we’ve ever produced. Thanks again to all the businesses involved and we hope that you enjoy the local and national articles with ideas to fix up the inside and outside of your home. In May look for our annual local Business Directory and both the “Tyrone and Bellwood-Antis 2003 Graduation” editions.
Last night’s Tyrone Area Chamber of Commerce annual dinner was very nice. Five of us from the newspaper attended. Next is the chamber’s annual “Business Expo” at the Bull Pen on Thursday, May 15.
I’d like to welcome Dave Hurst as a new columnist to The Daily Herald. David’s new column will focus on history and people from the local area involved in that history. This new feature begins tomorrow and will appear in every Saturday edition.
Tyrone Borough is working on May 10 to be the official grand opening of the new and improved Reservoir Park playground. Mayor Pat Stoner worked very hard on this project that brought new equipment to the playground for the first time in fifty years. There will be separate areas for children ages 2 to 5 and 5 and over. We’ll have more details when they are provided to us.
The Tyrone Little League needs another playing field. At least four or five baseball fields have disappeared in Tyrone. Ten teams currently have one field to play on. Isn’t there anything we can do? What about working on fixing up Shea Field? The stone wall needs to be rebuilt, 75 feet of top soil needs to be added, then new fencing, some new dugouts, scoreboard, and a few bleachers. There is nothing more important than activities for our young people, and I can’t think of a better activity then Little League baseball. I’m going to continue to research what could be done on this idea.
Enjoy the spring like temperatures and some rain over the weekend. No matter how cold it has been during the morning hours I have refused to wear a jacket. I guess I’m trying to will it to remain spring like. Thanks for reading and for subscribing to our ever growing newspaper.

Five hundred and thirty-one boxes of Girl Scout cookies left for Georgia yesterday as a gift from home to the men and women in the military from the Tyrone area.
