{"id":46832,"date":"2003-04-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-04-14T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/v3\/?p="},"modified":"2003-04-14T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2003-04-14T00:00:00","slug":"TAHS-academy-students-learn-about-PSU-Scholars-Program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tyronepa.com\/?p=46832","title":{"rendered":"TAHS academy students learn about PSU Scholars Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, the ninth grade Tyrone Area High School academy students hosted a 45 minute presentation about the Penn State University Scholars program.<br \/>\nHistory specialist Dr. Richard Stoller and academic advisor Heather Hatch spoke to the ninth grade academy students and interested teachers about the unlimited opportunities available through The University Scholars Program for students dedicated to learning. At the close of the presentation, Stoller and Hatch answered questions from the students.<br \/>\nSome of the information covered at the presentation included: facts about Penn State, academic majors, features of Penn State Altoona, features of Penn State University Park, scholarship opportunities, associate and baccalaureate degrees and the PACE program.<br \/>\nHatch stressed the importance of academics in high school, especially if students are interested in being considered for scholarship opportunities or the Penn State Honors Program.<br \/>\n\u201cNinth grade is when it starts to count,\u201d Hatch told the academy students.<br \/>\nPenn State and most other colleges and universities look at high school academic records from ninth grade to senior year for possible student admissions. Besides grade point average, other important requirements include students\u2019 SAT scores.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen you\u2019re being evaluated by colleges, they look at your high school records and the courses you take your senior year,\u201d added Stoller, for students who might feel like getting a case of \u201csenioritis\u201d their last year of high school.<br \/>\nStoller went on to explain the many opportunities of the University Scholars Program. If a student is accepted into the college program, there are many research opportunities available as well as smaller class sizes.<br \/>\nStudents must enroll in six credits of honors courses per year and maintain a 3.2 grade point average for the Penn State Altoona Honors Program. Requirements may be different for the honors program at the University Park Campus. Benefits of the program include: field trips, priority scheduling registration and scholarship opportunities.<br \/>\nThe TAHS teacher host for the presentation, Richard Merryman told students, \u201cThink of this as your own personal journey for educational fulfillment.\u201d<br \/>\nThe purpose of the presentation was to inform the students of the opportunities available to them in the near future and to think of Penn State as one option on the path to potential college and career choices.<br \/>\nAnyone interested in learning more information about the Penn State Altoona Honors Program should contact honors program coordinator Lee Ann De Reus at 949-5751.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday, the ninth grade Tyrone Area High School academy students hosted a 45 minute presentation about the Penn State University Scholars program.
