What started as an idea by Tyrone Women\u2019s Club member Judy Norris has grown into a full fledged event for the club.
\nThe Tyroners Are Great yard sale will take place May 10 at Reservoir Park.
\n\u201cWe hope to raise money for the Tyrone-Snyder Public Library through this sale,\u201d said Women\u2019s Club president Amy Emenhiser. \u201cThis year we decided to expand to make this more than just a yard sale. We hope to make it an event.\u201d
\nThe Tyrone Women\u2019s Club supports many organizations in the community.
\n\u201cThis year we are providing funding to the Blair County Wildlife Refuge, Citizens Fire Company and Joshua House just to name a few,\u201d said Emenhiser. \u201cWe sold rib dinners during the Labor Day picnic to help the YMCA. We help a family or two with presents at Christmas time. There are a lot of organizations that need support and we are happy to help in any way we can.\u201d
\nWith construction costs of the new facility figured to be $675,000, the library needs the support of the community.
\n\u201cWe have changed some things since last year,\u201d said Emenhiser. \u201cPeople can drop their items off the night before. The Boy Scouts will camp out at the park and guard the items as a community service project. The sorrority will be selling hot dogs, sloppy joes plus coffee and hot chocolate. We are looking for household items, tools, kids clothing and toys.\u201d
\nThe club will also sponsor a raffle throughout the day.
\n\u201cWe have many items that have already been donated for the raffle, but we are hoping to get more,\u201d said Emenhiser. \u201cThere is an 18-quart electric roaster from Sears, a certificate from Wal-Mart, an electric guitar and amplifier and a telescope. We will also have baskets from various businesses, a DVD player or VCR, a Mickey Mouse light up and a flannel sheet set. If you can\u2019t find something at the yard sale, you can take a chance on the raffle.\u201d
\nThe library will be holding a used book sale during the day and Community Action will be participating in the event as well.
\n\u201cI think it is great that the library and Community Action will be participating in the event,\u201d said Emenhiser. \u201cCommunity Action will have information about the heat assistance program that they offer and tons of information about programs that can help people in the community. They are also providing a band that will play for a couple hours during the day. We are still working out details with a band that we hope to announce the near future.\u201d
\nThe Tyrone Women\u2019s Club holds fundraisers throughout the year.
\n\u201cWe are in the middle of our easter egg sale which is our largest fund raiser of the year,\u201d said Emenhiser. \u201cThere are pie sales throughout the year. It is a great organization that is devoted to helping the community.\u201d
\nThe Tyrone Women\u2019s Club has membership openings.
\n\u201cWe are always looking for new members,\u201d said Emenhiser. \u201cTen years ago I was sponsored for membership by Betty Simpson. She was a great mentor to me and we now sponsor a scholarship for a musically inclined student in her memory. There are so many wonderful people in the club and it is a great networking tool.\u201d
\nAll the proceeds from the TAG sale will benefit the Tyrone-Snyder Public Library.
\n\u201cI use the library all the time,\u201d said Emenhiser. \u201cLearning is something you can never get enough of. We hope that we can get more people involved in the programs that the library offers. They have many classes, books on tape for people who have problems reading and the new computer labs that will be going in the new facility. This project is so worth while.\u201d
