The Tyrone girls softball team had a tough opponent Wednesday in defending state champion Penns Valley. The Lady Rams won the PIAA Class AA in 2002 and have nearly everybody back from last year\u2019s squad, including pitcher Christie Wiest.
\nWiest threw a two-hitter against the Lady Eagles, striking out eight while not walking a batter in an 8-0 win for Penns Valley at Tyrone.
\nKatie Whitby and Missy Stager were the only Tyrone girls to manage hits off Wiest.
\nHilary McNelis allowed Penns Valley just five hits, but walked 10 to go with four strikeouts.
\n\u201cPenns Valley bunted us to death,\u201d said Tyrone coach Lois Loncher. \u201cThat is their style of play. We just simply got outcoached, outplayed, the whole nine yards. We need to regroup today and get ready to take on Claysburg-Kimmel tomorrow.\u201d
\nPenns Valley improved to 2-0, while the Lady Eagles fall to 1-1. Friday\u2019s contest will be played at Claysburg starting at 4:30 p.m.
