The Tyrone senior scored three individual victories in the 400 meters, long jump and triple jump. The only other winners for the Golden Eagles were by Kevin Hershberger in the 800 meters and Evan Stover in the pole vault.
“It was our first meet of the season and we are going to use it as a learning experience,” said Tyrone coach Tony Yaniello. “We had some kids come out and show some serious potential. Kevin Hershberger scored a win in the 800 and a third in the 400 in his first meet ever. Nathan Barber scored a third in the 800 meters and knocked 20 seconds off his best practice time. We’re a young team, but we are showing signs of improvement.”
For Jeffries, Yaniello was pleased with the performance.
“In the 100 where he took second, the wind was blowing pretty hard in everyone’s faces,” said the long-time Tyrone coach. “Aaron came back after the 100 to score three wins. He had 18 of our 51 points as a team. You have to be pleased with his effort and we are looking forward to see how he performs when the weather heats up.”
The Tyrone boys fall to 0-1 on the season.
On the girls side, junior Sarah Pentland scored wins in the 1600 meters and 3200 meters.
“Sarah had a solid day and she has been battling the flu,” said Yaniello. “When she is feeling better and gets more training in, I believe that her potential is huge.”
Other winners for the Lady Eagles were Misty Snyder in the 100 hurdles, Marie DelBaggio in the high jump, Emily Lloyd in the long jump, Ashley Black in the triple jump and Jo Turner in the shot put.
“We had some girls step up and give some good individual performances,” said Yaniello. “Emily Lloyd is just a freshman and she won the long jump and placed in both hurdle events. Misty (Snyder) has been a solid hurdler for all four years she has competed. This is her best time to start the year and we expect her time to come down into the 17 second range. Ashley Black is going to get into the 30 foot range in the triple jump with more repetitions. Marie (DelBaggio) and Jo (Turner) have been consistent winners in the high jump and shot put for a couple years now. They both did enough to win in this meet, but have a lot more potential.”
Yaniello was happy with some of the performances by his young team.
“We have three Emily’s who are freshman,” said Yaniello. “All three had good days. Emily Lloyd scored nine points, Emily Ingle took a second in the 400 meters and she has been fighting a nagging hamstring injury and Emily McKenna, even though she didn’t place, she ran a 400 meter time that would have placed in a lot of meets last year. This team will continue to grow and improve.”
The Golden Eagles and Lady Eagles return to action on Thursday when they host Philipsburg-Osceola and Bishop Guilfoyle.
“We’re going to get some more work in before we run P-O and BG,” said Yaniello. “We’re in the same boat everyone else is in. There has only been about a week of practice outside and the more practice teams get in, the better the times will be.”
The double dual with P-O and BG starts at 4 p.m.
Boys
Chestnut Ridge 99, Tyrone 51
3200 relay: 1.
