Republican Commissoner contender Barry Wright made his candidacy official yesterday by filing election petitions with more than 1,800 names to the Blair County Board of Elections a day ahead of schedule. The deadline for filing petitions for the May 20 ballot is today.
\nWright has also announced that he will resign his job as Blair County Deputy Treasurer, effective the end of the week in order to devote his energy to the campaign.
\n\u201cI am grateful that Fred Foreman gave me the opportunity to serve the public as Deputy Treasurer,\u201d said Wright, who has held the post for a year and a half. \u201cI don\u2019t think it would be fair to the taxpayers, nor Fred, if I campaigned while holding the position. It\u2019s a full-time job, just as the Commissioner\u2019s post is. I will give that job all my energy as well.\u201d
\nTo get your name on the ballot for Blair County Commissioner, the candidate must botain at least 100 signatures.
\n\u201cI\u2019ve had very encouraging support and feedback from Blair County residents who want a full-time commissioner who is accessible to them,\u201d said Wright. \u201cIn obtaining nearly 20-times the number of signatures needed for a legal petition, I feel the public wants a commissioner who has never voted for a tax increase despite 10 years of public service.
\nThe most common reaction I got from our neighbors is how much we pay our commissioners, who basically work part-time at the Courthouse,\u201d said Wright. \u201cIf I\u2019m not awat at a meeting, I\u2019ll be at my desk as commissioner every day, just like most people expect. And I will turn back the annual pay raises the commissioners have voted themselves.
