Last season the Tyrone Golden Eagles marched deep into the playoffs and very nearly captured the District Six-AAA crown. This season they hope for another chance at the District Championship, and the road back to the championship winds through the playoffs and begins against the Scarlet Dragons of Central.
\nIt will be the second time this season the two squads have faced off, with the Golden Eagles winning the first contest back on January 4th by the count of 60-51.
\n\u201cI think it will be a pretty close game between two evenly matched teams,\u201d stated Central Head Coach Reggie Nevins. \u201cIt will come down to whoever makes the plays.\u201d
\nNevins will be counting on Darren Horton for some offense in the rematch with Tyrone, as Horton dropped 20 points on the Golden Eagles back in January and led the game in scoring.
\n\u201cHorton\u2019s been in the 20\u2019s every game,\u201d commented Tyrone Head Coach Mike Harris. \u201cIt\u2019s Coach Nevins\u2019 last year, and they want him to go out on a high note. It\u2019ll be tough.\u201d
\nTyrone has relied on Tyler Mertiff and Brady Hoover for the bulk of their scoring this season, and for the Golden Eagles to win their first playoff game the two will have to keep the scoring up.
\n\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to try to keep him off the boards,\u201d commented Nevins on Hoover. \u201cTyler (Mertiff) is best in the open court. They\u2019re going to be hard to contain, but hopefully our guys will make the plays.\u201d
\n\u201cThey\u2019re going to turn it up,\u201d Harris responded when asked about Hoover and Mertiff. \u201cGreat players step it up in crunch time.\u201d
\nTyrone and Central tip off Friday at the Hollidaysburg Junior High School at 7:30. The Golden Eagles played three times at the sight earlier this year in the Golden Tiger Roundball Classic.
\n\u201cIt gives us a little comfort zone,\u201d stated Harris of his team\u2019s previous experience on the court. \u201cOur kids are familiar with the court. Courts are the same dimension wise, but some are smaller and some are bigger. We played really well there too.\u201d
\nThe Scarlet Dragons enter the game with a 14-10 record, and have gone 2-2 in their last four games. The Golden Eagles are one game behind their opponents with a record of 13-10. Tyrone is riding a three-game winning streak into the playoffs, and will no doubt be looking to keep the win streak rolling throughout the playoffs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
