The 6-foot guard-post scored six of her nine fourth-quarter points in the last 2:56 of the game and came away with a key steal with 52 seconds left to seal a 66-56 Mountain League road victory in Wingate.
DelBaggio finished the game with 23 points, 14 rebounds and four steals.
“I played weak early on but late in the game I knew there was no way we were losing this game. I wouldn’t let us,” said DelBaggio, who has spent a career tearing up BEA after scoring a TAHS freshman record 23 points against them in her first trip to Wingate four seasons ago.
The win improved the Lady Eagles’ record to 10-9 overall and 2-3 in the second cycle of the Mountain League. It also showed that Tyrone’s senior class may be capable of handling the burden dealt to it by a string of injuries over the last month that has slashed the Lady Eagles’ bench dramatically.
Without starter Hilary McNelis – a double-figure scorer who is out at least until the playoffs with a foot injury – and without freshman Ashley Roth, who was just beginning to find her place on the team before suffering a leg injury in last night’s jayvee game, the Lady Eagles’ senior class pulled through against BEA. Joanna Turner scored 14 points and grabbed 11 boards, Amber DelBaggio netted 13 and Lauren Haag chipped in 12.
Tyrone was able to build big leads on BEA several times during the contest, but every time Bald Eagle made a push to get back into the game. Tyrone led 17-9 after the first quarter, 22-9 one minute into the second, and 43-33 in the third.
But every run that ended in a sizeable Tyrone lead was answered with frantic play from BEA. After Tyrone built its biggest lead of the game in the second quarter, BEA went to a full-court press and Janess Lyle scored six straight to make it a ball game again. Bald Eagle trailed 31-28 at halftime and went into the locker room with momentum after their scrappy effort nullified Tyrone’s experience and savvy and turned the game into a contest of Who-Wants-It-More.
“We committed a lot of mental errors and they were outhustling us,” said Marie DelBaggio.
Turner and Haag combined to score 10 of Tyrone’s first 12 points of the third quarter and build a 10-point Lady Eagle lead with less than three minutes to go in the third, but again BEA stormed back. Bald Eagle outscored Tyrone 10-4 to close the period and trailed just 47-43.
In the fourth BEA hit a pair of long three pointers early in the period and tied the game at 54-54 when Megan Garner converted on a conventional three-point play with 4:10 to play. BEA went ahead by a basket on back-to-back 1-for-2 foul-line trips by Colleen Reese.
That was when Marie DelBaggio really began to assert herself inside. She took the ball hard to the basket on every ensuing Tyrone possession and was rewarded with three trips to the charity stripe in the closing minutes, sinking six of six.
Turner regained the lead for Tyrone at 56-54 with a pair of foul shots with 2:34 remaining, and Amber DelBaggio made it a two possession game when she drained a running one-hander in the lane 50 seconds later.
That forced BEA to foul, and Tyrone went 6-for-8 at the stripe down the stretch.
“We changed defenses several times in the last couple minutes,” said Swaney. “We went from a 1-3-1 to a 1-2-2 and then to man and I think that had them guessing at times.”
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Lady Eagles, who now host Penn Cambria Monday in a non-conference game.
Hoop Notes: BEA outrebounded Tyrone 45-39 … Tyrone shot a season-high 39 foul shots … after committing 13 turnovers through the first three quarters, Tyrone turned the ball over just once in the fourth … Bald Eagle slipped to 0-19 and 0-5 in the Mountain League.
JUNIOR VARSITY
Marissa Hoover scored 10 points and pulled down six boards, but it wasn’t enough to keep Tyrone from falling to BEA 45-36 in the junior varsity game. Ashley Roth scored nine points and Kylie Wallace added eight.
VARSITY
TYRONE – M. DelBaggio 5 12-17 23; Turner 4 6-7 14; A.
