The Tyrone Area School District honored 14 students as Renaissance Stars for the second marking period of the 2002-03 school year.
\nTo become a Renaissance Star, students must be nominated by a teacher due to outstanding academic achievement, positive attitude or overall improvements.
\nIn the second marking period, the Tyrone schools honored: Amanda Detwiler, Tiffany Hopkins, Sarah Halter, Tommy Hoover, Cora Lauver, James Updike, Monica Galbraith, Evan Kost, Jennifer Bryan, Kenny Miner, Ben Kustenbauder, Brady Hoover, Paul Guerekovich and Jesse Kulak.
\nSixth grade teacher Elaine Conrad nominated Amanda Detwiler. Amanda was described in her nomination as a thoughtful and pleasant student. \u201cHer work is always in on time and she demonstrates a great work ethic,\u201d said Conrad in her nomination. \u201cShe is known or always trying her best and being a good friend to others.\u201d
\nTiffany Hopkins was nominated by sixth grade teachers Don Friday, Scott Boslough and Anna Myers. She was chosen by her team of teachers because of her very pleasant personality, positive attitude and for always trying her best.
\nA team of seventh grade teachers nominated Sarah Halter. Her teachers said Sarah is an outstanding student who has performed well all year. Her work is always turned in on time and is of superior quality. Her attitude toward work and her classmates conveys modesty and maturity. She is definitely an asset to any classroom.
\nEighth grade teacher Leslie Ieraci nominated Cora Lauver. \u201cCora exhibited a desire to improve and shows leadership in the classroom,\u201d said Ieraci in her nomination. \u201cShe is extremely helpful and is willing to assist both her teachers and peers in daily tasks. Cora\u2019s positive attitude and effort have enabled her to achieve an A- in U.S. History this marking period.\u201d
\nJames Updike was nominated by eighth grade math teacher Nicole Ahles. \u201cJames puts a lot of effort in his work and never gives up,\u201d said Ahles in her nomination.
\nNinth grade teacher Suzy Burket nominated freshman Monica Galbraith. \u201cMonica has been doing an excellent job keeping up with her work and taking personal responsibility for assignments,\u201d said Burket in her nomination.
\nEvan Kost was nominated by Marie-Jose Smith and Teresa Myers. \u201cEvan is motivated at all times,\u201d the teachers said in his nomination. \u201cHe\u2019s attentive and genuine. Evan was also described as a very dedicated student who takes great pride in his work. Evan is pleasurable, talented, sings and act and his fun of learning is contagious.\u201d
\nJennifer Bryan and Kenny Miner were nominated by 10th grade teachers Dan Albright and Nikki Massaro-Kauffman respectively. Bryan was nominated for her excellent improvement in the chemistry classroom. Miner was nominated for his overall improvement in attitude, effort and academic performance.
\nBrady Hoover and Ben Kustenbauder were nominated by 11th grade teachers Nikki Massaro-Kauffman and Steve Everhart. Hoover was nominated for his hard work in class and positive attitude. Kustenbauder was commended for his overall improvement and his commitment to complete all assigned compositions.
\nPaul Gurekovich was nominated by 12th grade teachers Michael McNelis. In his nomination, McNelis described Gurekovich as a role model for positive attitude and hard work in the classroom. Jesse Kulak was nominated by teachers Mark Brown, Kathy Holsinger and Robin Kramer. Kulak was commended in his nomination for his hard work and conscientious attitude. He was praised for his creative ability in the English classroom and excellent work ethic.
