It seems just yesterday, Alanna Daniels was scoring her 1,000th point to really solidify a great career at Tyrone Area High School. Well that was a year ago and now the Tyrone graduate is continuing her education and basketball careers at Seton Hill College in Greensburg.
\nAs a freshman, Alanna is one of a large group trying to make an impression on Ladies basketball coach Rich Rosensteel.
\nEarlier this week, Daniels made good on that chance, leading her teammates back to a victory over Carlow College with a personal best 19 points. Seton Hill was down by 14 points at the half before engineering their largest comeback of the year to win by 10. Leading the charge, Daniels pumped in six of 10 from the field, including three of six from beyond the three-point arc and added four throws from the foul line in as many tries for 19 points, plus grabbing three rebounds, handing out an assist and getting one steal.
\nDaniels was rewarded for her performance and scored 13 points with another good performance in a loss Thursday night.
\n\u201cAlanna is a diligent worker who picks things up quickly,\u201d said Coach Rosensteel. \u201cWe were interested in her ability to drive-to penetrate and drive from the perimeter then pull up and either shoot or pass off to an open teammate. She hadn\u2019t been doing that earlier in the season, but is starting to do it now. Alanna has made an excellent adjustment to the rigors of college basketball. She has been getting about 20 minutes per game. She is part of alarge group of freshmen and we have been trying to see who will rise to the top and take over as our point guard. Alanna has the advantage of being able to play either the point guard or the shooting guard.\u201d
\nDaniels has been doing a great job academically in the classroom as well as her work on the basketball court.
\nCoach Rosensteel gives credit to another mentor, Alanna\u2019s coach at Tyrone, Coach Jim Swaney. \u201cReal credit goes to Alanna\u2019s high school coach, who obviously does a great job with his kids.\u201d
\nDaniels matured as she went through her high school career taking the team with her.
\nThe Tyrone girls team finished 6-17 in Alanna\u2019s freshman season. Then improved to 11-13 when Daniels was a sophomore. That was followed by a 16-11 mark with an appearance in the Class AAA semifinal playoffs in Alanna\u2019s junior year. Finally last year, the Eagles went deep into the playoffs before falling to Number Two seed Johnstown, finishing 18-8.
\nDaniels started to put it together late in her freshman campaign, averaging 14 points per game over the last month of the season with Coach Swaney putting her at the two guard spot, because \u201cshe was the only person capable of handling that kind of burden.\u201d Alanna stepped it up to a 12.4 points per game average as a junior and finally hit the 1,000-point mark last season, finishing at Tyrone with 1,039.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
