Freshman Leonard Wilson was fouled only ten seconds into the game and converted both free throws to kick off a big night for both himself and his team.
“Leonard Wilson had 14 points tonight, he had a really big game for us,” said Harris of his freshman, who was one of four Golden Eagles who reached double digits in scoring against the Mounties. “He’s playing really well for us.”
Another of those players was Junior Brady Hoover, who rolled over the Mounties to lead all scorers with 22 points. Hoover scored 10 of his points in the first quarter, and added 12 rebounds on the night.
“I told our guys we needed to put this team away early,” stated Harris on Hoover and the rest of the Eagles’ first quarter dominance. “We couldn’t let them hang around, they’re scrappy and they can shoot the ball. We had to punish them early and thats what we did, we outscored them 23-9 right off the bat.”
The Mounties displayed those characteristics in the second quarter, narrowing the Tyrone lead to 8 heading into the locker room. After Tyrone opened the quarter with 5 straight points the Mounties went on a 14-4 run, which was aided by two three pointers by junior Mike LaFuria. Wilson was able to add four points in the last 20 seconds of the half for Tyrone, but the Mounties had found their way back into the game.
“They got some good shots,” Harris said of the Mounties in the second quarter. “They drove the ball at times, and we didn’t rotate back and gave up some easy rebounds.”
Unfortunatly for Phillipsburg, the Golden Eagles came out of the locker room ready to put the Mounties away. Junior Dan Domenick contributed four points to a 6-0 Tyrone run to start the second half, and after consecutive Mountie buckets the Golden Eagles opened their lead back up with an 8-2 run.
Despite the 19 point third quarter that put the Eagles ahead by 17, Tyrone was able to do even better in the final period. Senior standout Tyler Mertiff scored the first four points of the quarter for Tyrone before exiting the game early due to his team’s big lead. Mertiff tallied 14 points in the contest, including 8 in the first quarter.
The Golden Eagle jayvees worked their way into the game throughout the final quarter, gaining valuable experience against varisty opponants until Phillipsburg inserted their jayvees. Kevin Hershberger scored 6 points in the game, all of them coming in a 1:20 span late in the final quarter.
“That’s huge,” commented Harris on getting younger players experience in varsity games. “I never want to have a team where I dont have guys with experience. We need these guys to play in big games.”
“This was a very easy game to overlook,” continued Harris. “We rebounded the ball well, it was a concerted effort to box out, and we did well boxing out tonight. We did a nice job.”
The junior varsity Golden Eagles also came away with a win, putting the jayvee Mounties away 65-42 prior to the Varisty contest. Jason Haney and Nick Cushion led the way for the Eagles with 12 points each, while Barry Gummo chipped in 11 and Josh Crabtree added 10.
“The kids played hard tonight,” said coach Luke Rhoades after his junior varsity Eagles upped their record to 9-1. “They played good defense, and we have a big game Monday against Penn Cambria.”
The Varsity Golden Eagles also face Penn Cambria at home on Monday, with Penn Cambria posting a 10-1 record.
Tyrone 76 Philipsburg-Osceola 53
Score by Quarter
TYRONE 23 13 19 21 – 76
PHILIPSBURG-OSCEOLA 9 15 14 15 – 53
ndividual Scoring
Tyrone- Mertiff 4 3-4 14, Hoover 8 5-6 21, Ben Gummo 1 0-0 2, Ashcroft 2 0-0 10, Hershberger 2 2-2 6, Wilson 4 6-8 14, Barry Gummo 1 1-1 3.
