On Thursday night in Williamsburg, Bellwood showed that they are not a one man team. Dan Smith made 8 three-pointers and Steve Crider pulled a career-high 13 rebounds as the Blue Devils defeated the Blue Pirates of Williamsburg 66-48.
The first quarter belonged to the aforementioned Smith. The B-A guard drained five three-point field goals in the first 2:30 of the game that propelled his team to an early 15-6 advantage and spelled an early end to the Blue Pirates’ hopes of giving Bellwood-Antis its first loss. From there, the Blue Devils showed their depth, receiving baskets from six different players in the first quarter that led to a 24-16 lead at the end of the first stanza.
The Blue Pirates showed some sign of life late in the first quarter, which carried over to the second. Sparked by a man-to-man defense and forward George Lehman’s post play, Williamsburg was able to keep the game close. However, a late surge led by B-A’s Ricky Shannon lifted the Blue Devils to a 38-28 halftime lead.
Williamsburg cut the Blue Devil lead to 7 on Nate Cadle’s three pointer early in the third quarter, but that was as close as they would get. Bellwood quickly countered with two more Dan Smith three-pointers that put the game out of reach for good.
On a night when Bellwood’s leading scorer Ryan Myers was held to only 10 points, Smith, who finished with a game-high 26 points, was clearly the spark that ignited the fire in the Blue Devil offense. His eight three-pointers left him one short of the all-time Bellwood-Antis school record for the most three-point field goals in a game.
“Danny was just huge for us tonight,” said Blue Devil head coach Tim Keech, “His perimeter shooting not only got us off to a hot start, it helped us to pull away in the end.”
In addition to Smith’s shooting, it was the little things that sometimes go unnoticed that made the biggest difference in the game for the Blue Devils. Ricky Shannon dished out 10 assists and Steve Crider pulled 13 rebounds. Both of which padded the Blue Devils’ statistical domination of their counterparts from Williamsburg. Bellwood-Antis was dominant on the board, out-rebounding the Blue Pirates 28-14.
The lone bright spot for Williamsburg was George Lehman. The senior center scored 17 of his team-high 23 points in the first half, single-handedly keeping his team in the game before halftime.
With the win, Bellwood-Antis improved its record to 13-0 overall and 8-0 in the first cycle of the Juniata Valley League. The win also brings the Blue Devils to within one win of clinching the Juniata Valley League first cycle championship. Bellwood-Antis will look to do so on Monday, January 13 as they host Penns Valley.
