The two Blair County rivals met on the C-K mat on Tuesday night with Claysburg-Kimmel delivering a 66-9 defeat on the Blue Devils.
While the Claysburg kids have practically all been wrestling since they were in elementary school, most of the Bellwood kids have at most, two years of junior high wrestling experience .
Things are beginning to look up for the B-A wrestling program. There are about 30 kids in the elementary program and the junior high has a winning record and a lot of kids who have already wrestled for two years. The rise to respectability is a long road however that goes in spurts and takes a lot of time and patience.
After Claysburg waltzed through the first five weights with an imposing 30-0 lead, Ron Colyer put Bellwood-Antis on the scoreboard at 135. Colyer (3-8) scored a takedown and collected a penalty point for a 3-2 lead over Matt Parry. The pair traded four reversals in the second period until Colyer stuck Parry on his back for three nearfall points at the end of the period for a 10-6 advantage. In the third period, Parry notched a takedown, but with Parry in control, Colyer leaned back until the Claysburg wrestlers shoulders touched the mat for the defensive fall for Colyer .
The other B-A win came at 160, where Dwayne Cherry (11-11) fell behind Bobby Ciaverella 4-1 after the opening period, narrowed the deficit to 6-4 with a reversal and penalty point, then used an escape, another penalty point and a five-point move near the end of the match to take an 11-6 victory.
The match began at 103, with B-A sophomore Shane Evans falling by pin to the Bulldogs Kelly Sell. However, Evans (6-11) was in the match, leading 4-3 at the end of the middle period, before getting reversed and pinned. Evans gave up the first takedown to Sell to trail 2-0 after one period, but came back to take the lead on a reversal and takedown. Evans has now wrestled Sell three times and has shown improvement each time. In the Tri-County Tournament, Sell decked Evans in 4:31, with Shane never really in the match. At the Blair/Huntingdon County Tourney, Sell won a 9-1 major decision. On Tuesday, Evans had the lead and carried the action to Sell, until he got caught.
The Bulldogs got falls from Adam Whetstone over Mike McGeary (1-17) at 112, and Ryan McIntyre over Josh Ervine (9-13) at 125.
Padraig Flynn (2-12) was pinned at 140, by Corey Deffibaugh, Dustin Earnest (2-5) was pinned by Derek Musselman at 189, Chris Carrier (2-13) was pinned by Jay Imler at 215 and Josh Rosella (13-6) was pinned by Tony Paris in 5:32 at 275. Rosella has pinned Paris in 1:03 at the Blair/Huntingdon County Tournament.
At 152, Jared Ervine (12-9) and Jeremy Knott were deadlocked at 1-1, when Knott registered a takedown and put Ervine on his back for a three-point nearfall and a 5-2 win. Ervine had majored Knott 14-5 at the Blair/Huntingdon County Tournament. Mike Thomas (5-7) trailed Kenny Weyandt 2-0 after a first-period takedown at 171. Thomas scored a second-period takedown and gave up two escapes but still trailed by two points, 4-2 and the match ended that way.
“The kids wrestled all right, up to a point,” explained coach Wilson. “Our inexperience shows every time we walk out on the mat. We were in a couple matches and ended up getting pinned, which hurts. We’re not displeased with the effort. We are going to struggle for a while, until we get to the point where we have some experience in the program.”
The Bellwood-Antis junior high raised their record to 6-4 with a 72-30 win over Claysburg-Kimmel. Bellwood-Antis won three of the six matches actually wrestled. Eli Colyer (100), Ronnie Wilson (115), and Dustin Harris (130) pinned their opponents.
Claysburg-Kimmel 66 Bellwood-Antis 9
103-Kelly Sell (CK) pinned Shane Evans 4:43
112-Adam Whetstone (CK) pinned Mike McGeary 0:51
119-Aaron Doroba (CK) won by forfeit
125-Ryan McIntyre (CK) pinned Josh Ervine 3:06
130-Johnny Weyandt (CK) won by forfeit
135-Ron Colyer (BA) pinned Matt Parry 5:59
140-Corey Deffibaugh (CK) pinned Padraig Flynn 1:12
145-Ian Leslie (CK) won by forfeit
152-Jeremy Knott (CK) dec.
