Paronish effort was backed by Lindsay McCombie’s 12 points for Northern Cambria. Both Paronish and McCombie earned All-Tournament Team honors.
The Lady Blue Devils were able to keep the game close early, but in the end, were not able to overcome 17 first-half turnovers. A large number of turnovers, forced and unforced, directly contributed to both of Bellwood-Anits’ losses in the tournament.
“All of the turnovers we made in the first half just killed us,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Nick Lovrich. “That really allowed them to break the game open before halftime. Give our girls credit though, they took much better care of the ball in the second half.”
Bellwood-Antis trailed only 17-13 after the opening quarter, but Northern Cambria used 20-11 and 24-11 scoring margins in the middle two quarters to effectively put the game away.
Katie Gardner led Bellwood-Antis with 17 points and eight rebounds. Ashley Edevane added eight points and Rachael Meredith had seven points for the Lady Blue Devils who fell to 5-4 on the season. Gardner’s efforts, coupled with a 22-point binge in the first round, earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Gardner made the most of her return to the lineup on Saturday, after missing several games while recovering from an injury. The junior forward pumped in 22 points in the first round against Cambria Heights, but it wasn’t enough as Cambria Heights punched their ticket to the Sunday night’s championship game with a convincing 58-44 win over the tournament’s host team.
Echoing coach Lovrich’s comments, the Blue Devils made numerous mistakes and turnovers and found themselves down at the 37-20. The Lady Blue Devils regrouped to outscore Cambria Heights in the second half, but couldn’t overcome the Lady Highlanders big lead.
Daniel Lantzy scored 25 points and teammate Molly Barrett recorded 15 for the Lady Highlanders, who upped their record to 7-3. Trista Sprankle added five points, while Emily Worthing, Ashley Smith and Ashley Edevane each chipped in with four for the Lady Blue Devils.
Westmont Hilltop got 20 points from Krista Britcher as the Lady Hilltoppers defeated Northern Cambria 56-51, on Saturday in the opener for both schools to advance to the championship final. Sara Kirsch led Northern Cambria with 10 points to go along with Lindsay McCombie’s nine points and Jackie Jones’ eight tallies. Jones also pulled down 13 rebounds for the Lady Colts, who dropped to 7-3 on the season. The Lady Hilltoppers received 10 points from Kaitlyn Urban and seven from Allison Buchan as they improved their record to 7-1.
In the championship final Westmont Hilltop claimed the Second Annual Lady Blue Devil Classic championship after Bellwood-Antis won the inaugural tournament in 2001, with a 62-47 victory over Cambria Heights. The Lady Hilltoppers were led by Allison Buchan’s 15 points. Also, Westmont Hilltop received 12 points from both Sara Buchan and Kaitlyn Urban and 10 points from Krista Britcher, who was named the tournament’s MVP. Cambria Heights got 22 points from Danielle Lantzy, who also was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Saturday
Semifinals
Cambria Heights 58 Bellwood-Antis 44
CAMBRIA HEIGHTS – Lantzy 10 5-11 25, Thomas 3 0-1 6, Bender 2 0-2 4, McMurray 3 0-0 8, Barrett 5 5-9 15, McMullan 0 0-0 0, Nagle 0 0-0 0.
