New York Mets’ right-hander Steve Trachsel pitched 5 2\/3 innings of three-hit ball and collected two hits of his own in leading Binghamton past the Altoona Curve, 2-1 Tuesday at NYSEG Stadium.
\nA solid crowd of 4,216 turned out to watch the major league hurler try to work his way back to the big club. Trachsel (1-0), rehabilitating a strained right trapezius muscle with Binghamton (47-46), allowed just one unearned run in picking up the win. He showed a little rust in walking four, but he also fanned five.
\nAt the plate, Trachsel ignited a two-run rally in the third with a one-out single off Curve right-hander Ben Shaffar (6-7). Jose Reyes, the Mets’ top position player prospect, knocked Trachsel in with a triple to right center to tie the game, 1-1. Reyes trotted home with what proved to be the winning run on a double by Esix Snead.
\nShaffar settled down after the B-Mets’ flurry and worked six innings on a yield of two runs and six hits. He walked one and fanned three in taking a tough defeat.
\nAltoona (46-47) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an unearned run. Trachsel dropped a feed from first baseman Aaron McNeal on a grounder and Shawn Garrett reached on the error. Curve newcomer Joe Caruso, a Lock Haven native, laid down a bunt single to push Garrett into scoring position. Both runners moved up on a ground out by J.J. Davis.
\nDan Meier, who drove in Altoona’s only run in a 6-1 loss to the B-Mets Monday, plated Garrett with a sacrifice fly to center.
\nThe Curve mounted a bases-loaded threat against Trachsel in the third, but the big-league veteran fanned Davis to end the frame.
\nAndy Cook and Eric Cammack (third save) combined to pitch 3 1\/3 hitless innings in relief of Trachsel.
\nAltoona has lost seven of its last eight and is 3-10 in July. The Curve has scored one run or less in four of the six games it has played on the current road trip.
