Most meets start at 3:30 or 4:00 and sometime student athletes are missing a period at the end of the day and coaches have to find coverage for their class. Proper food digestion is a problem because we don’t want anything in their stomach during competition. Some foods need two or three hours to properly digest so eating super before the 5:00 start would not be a good idea and it is too long to wait until after the meet to eat. The weather was good for a change and there were many good performances.”
Penns Valley defeated the Tyrone Boys 83 to 67 and BEA defeated the Golden Eagles 107-43.
In the boys meet with Penns Valley, the Golden Eagles won seven of the 18 events. Penns Valley had a huge edge on the track out scoring Tyrone 56 to 31. Tyrone had the edge in the field events 36 to 27. Dominating the jumping events, Tyrone outscored Penns Valley 27 to 2 sweeping the Long Jump and placing first and second in both the Triple and High Jumps.
Larry Glace won the Long and Triple Jump and placed second in the 100 and 200.
“Larry is really stepping up for us in all his events,” Coach Yaniello said. “We were without two of our best sprinter/jumpers today and haven’t had standout sprinter and state qualifier Johnny Franco at all so far this season. Without our three top sprinters on our state qualifying 400 relay team makes it near impossible to win against quality teams we have defeated in the past. Larry ran quality times in the sprints and has been a pleasant surprise jumping for us. Kyle Updike continues to dominate the high jump with another six-foot jump. In the throws Mark Mingle had another good throw in winning the shot put.”
On the track Penns Valley showed off their championship distance crew that won district cross country gold. “They had fresh runners going after Ben Ingle in all his races,” Yaniello said. “We won the 3200 relay and Ben ran an outstanding split (2:03) with teammates Dustin Elder, Nathan Kruis, and Richie Stever. Although Ben finished second in the 1600, his time was outstanding and he had trouble bouncing back from those two quality races. Tyrone hurdlers came up big against Penns Valley placing first and second in both hurdle races. “Our times are coming down as Brandon Gehret, and Ross Black continue to improve both running personal bests in the 300 hurdles,” Yaniello said.
“This was a good meet for us to see where we are at and where we need to go,” Coach Yaniello said. “We were short-handed because of some injuries and sickness that hurt our chances for winning but we were please with the effort from those who competed today.”
The short-handed Lady Eagles had a rough meet against an outstanding Penns Valley team losing 143 to 6 and losing to BEA 118 to 19.
Lizzie Shields was a double winner placing first in the 200 (28.0) and 400 (105.2). Other place winners were Christina Daugherty, second 100 (14.2) and third in the 200 (30.9), Ashley Salyer placed third in the 400 (1:10.6) and 800 (2:56), Heather Walk placed third in the Long Jump, and Ashley Ford placed third in the triple jump. The Lady Eagles were without standout jumper and sprinter Rachel Emigh who was out because of illness.
BOYS
Penns Valley 83 Tyrone 67
100 Dash-1. Stover (PV) 11.5, 2.
