Bald Eagle Area tuned up for their entrance in the District 6-AAA Team Duals at Tyrone on Saturday by trimming Tyrone 54-20, on Thursday evening at Tyrone.
The Golden Eagles (7-8) got wins from dependable lightweights Ronnie Garbinsky and A.J. Schopp and Anthony Romano and Cody Weaver, but Bald Eagle Area, who will wrestle top seed Bellefonte in a semifinal dual on Saturday, won everything else.
After Bald Eagle Area put three straight falls in the book to open the match, Garbinsky (28-2) utilized three takedowns, an escape and six nearfall points to run up a big 13-3 lead over Justin Giedroc before working the pin in 5:00. The match was tied 2-2 after the first period, but then the Tyrone ninth grader got going.
At 112, Schopp (28-3) jumped out to a 5-0 start after one period, but Kyle Granite used a reversal and nearfall to lower the deficit to 7-5. Schopp put the match out of reach however, with a reversal and three back points of his own to win 12-5.
Romano (25-7) ran a takedown clinic in the opening period at 130, taking Ian Neeley down four times, then added three sets of nearfalls and a a reversal to tech fall Neeley 20-5, in 4:52.
Cody Weaver (17-11) followed at 135, by pinning John Decker in 4:56. The first period was scoreless, before the two traded reversals and Decker added an escape to lead 3-2 after the second stanza. In the third period, Weaver reversed Decker and got the fall midway through the final two minutes.
The match began at 189, where the BEA heavyweights took control. At 189, A.J. Robinson pinned Dustin Weaver (1-22) in 1:12, and Jon Gingrich followed with another first-period fall over 215-pounder Corey Barnhart (3-17) in 1:48. At 285, Dalaun Carroll (6-13) was decked by 2007 state qualifier Tim Watson in 3:03 for a quick 18-0 team lead.
Following the wins by Garbinsky and Schopp, Caleb Hoffman shut out Chase Weaver 7-0 at 119. Hoffman had three takedowns and an escape to defeat Weaver (10-14). Corey Gates pinned Matt Moore (1-5) in 3:23, at 125.
At 140, James Weston (9-16) was pinned by Rusty Fetzer in 2:56, and at 160 Caleb Hoffman pinned Cody Smith (1-19) in 0:27.
In the closest match of the evening, Tyrone junior Jeremy Barlett and Brandon Coakley went into overtime to decide the win at 145. Barlett (16-9) escaped in the second period and Coakley matched that in the third. In the first one-minute overtime period and the first of two 30-second extra periods, neither wrestler could score. Finally in the third OT, also 30 seconds in duration, Coakley reversed Barlett for the 3-1 win.
BEA received forfeits to Randy Breon at 152 and returning PIAA state champion Quentin Wright at 171.
Eagle Notes: Missed in the report on the Bedford Thomas Chevrolet Tournament over last weekend was Dustin Weaver’s first win of the year. Weaver, who went 1-2 over the weekend, pinned Matt Walker from Fort Cherry, in 4:24, and lost a pair of close decisions. Dustin dropped a 3-2 decision to Blairsville’s Brandon Tomacher and fell 4-0 to Jake Reid of Huntingdon. In the dual meet just the week before, Reid had pinned Weaver….Tyrone will finish their dual meet season with back-to-back matches on the road. The Eagles travel to Central Cambria on Tuesday, Feb. 5, and to Altoona on Feb. 6.
