The Tyrone Area High School girls’ tennis team opened their season on Monday at Fishertown against Chestnut Ridge.
The Lady Eagles dropped a 5-2 decision to the Chestnut Ridge girls, but tennis coach Mike Hample was happy with the first outing, and particularly excited about the two doubles wins.
Amy Lewis and MaryElyn Hunter won the first doubles match, defeating Courtney Makdad and Jena Mock 8-4 and then Elena Myers and Bellwood-Antis freshman Emily Tompkins dominated Rachel Snider and Maggie Hess 8-1.
“I was very encouraged by both doubles teams,” said coach Hampton. “They seemed to play well together. It was the first match with the Tyrone/Bellwood-Antis co-op program and already it paid off with Elena and Emily getting us a win at the number two doubles. Elena and Amy Lewis also played very competitive singles matches for us. This was a good first match to get out of the way.”
Tyrone is at home today against Bishop Guilfoyle, at the Clay Avenue courts at 3:30 p.m. in the Lady Eagles first home match of the 2008 season.
