It can be real tough to wrestle a match this early in the season, before the football players really have a chance to switch from football shape to wrestling shape-ask anybody who has done both in high school. Add to that, the simple fact that many of the wrestlers in the opponents line-up have been there before, many for multiple years and have gone far into the postseason tournaments. Tyrone put out the wrestling mat for a tough Indian Valley team on Tuesday evening at the Tyrone Senior High School gym and got stomped on the low end of a 47-26 score. Victories on the mat were few and looking at the lights was a common factor for the Golden Eagles. Senior Shayne Tate and sophomore Cody Smith worked over Indian Valley foes for back-to-back victories at 171 and 189, but the pickings were slim otherwise. Ronnie Garbinsky (2-0) and A. J. Schopp (2-0) both picked up their second forfeit wins in as many dual meets for the Eagles at 103, and 112. “One of the bad things about it is those first two weight classes, Ronnie (Garbinsky) and A. J. (Schopp) need to get some competition,” explained Tyrone coach Blair Packer. “Indian Valley came in with a nice team, five guys ranked in the state. You know you have a rough match ahead of you, but we are in it for experience right now. We are trying to hone our skills and this is the best way to do it, have competition like that.” Anthony Romano was trailing 4-0, when with 10 seconds to wrestle in the third period, he was injured by his opponent. Referee Bruce Hasselrig called Tyler Bedelyon for a penalty point and when Romano was unable to continue after two minutes recovery time, the Tyrone senior was awarded the win by injury default. Romano was taken to the Altoona Hospital as a precautionary measure to be checked out. “It was an unfortunate event at 130, with Anthony and Bedelyon,” said Packer. “It was an unfortunate happening, and hopefully he will be alright.” Tate (2-0) jumped out in front of Zach Knepp 4-1 with a pair of first-period takedowns, and added an escape and another takedown in the middle stanza. In the third period, The Tyrone senior allowed an escape, then hit a pair of five-point moves on takedowns and nearfalls, before giving up an escape and notching his sixth takedown of the match to register a 19-4 technical fall. Smith (1-1) picked up his first varsity victory with an 8-5 triumph over Tony Shearer. The Eagle sophomore and Shearer were scoreless for the first portion of the opening period at 189, before Smith hit a headlock and hip toss to put Shearer on his back for two and two (takedown and backpoints), and a 4-0 advantage that would prove to be the difference in the match. Shearer escaped and Smith took him down, for a 6-1 lead after two periods. In the final period, Smith, starting in the down position, fought off his back when Shearer scored three nearfall points to close the margin to 6-4, reversed Shearer for two big points and allowed an escape to set the final score at 8-5. “Coming up to the varsity and getting his first win was nice for Cody. These guys are both football players which kind of put then a little bit behind, but they came out tonight and showed us they are catching up. They’ve got a ways to go, but they are getting on track. With the dual beginning at the 135-pound weight class, Indian Valley started with the strength of their line-up, getting four six-point wins and a major decision to quickly open up a 28-0 lead. Chad Frankhouser pinned Cody Weaver (1-1) at 135, Adam Will pinned James Weston (1-1) at 140, Ty Boyer pinned Matt Moore (0-1) at 145, Cory Batista majored Jeremy Barlett (1-1) 14-4 at 152, and Thomas Havice picked up a forfeit at 160. Skylar Romig pinned Dustin Weaver (0-2) at 215, and although Dalaun Carroll (0-1) opened the match at 285 with a takedown, Nate Smitherman turned him for the fall in the second period. At 119, Joe Short made a first-period takedown standup in a 4-2 win over Chase Weaver (1-1). Each wrestler scored a takedown in the second period and the third stanza was scoreless. Cole Smith never allowed Tyrone sophomore Robby Sellers (1-1) to get going at 125, horsing Sellers for a 12-0 major decision.
