State police reported a double motorcycle fatal crash on October 1 along SR 1013, Tyrone Township, but issued a correction early this morning.
Two known males from Altoona were involved, one riding a 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle wearing a helmet and the other riding a 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle not wearing a helmet.
The crash occurred as both men were traveling north along SR 1013 at a high rate of speed.
The driver operating the Kawasaki lost control of his motorcycle while attempting to negotiate a right hand curve in the roadway. The motorcycle slid across the roadway and struck a large embankment. The motorcycle and the operator then slid back across the roadway and struck the guide rails along the northbound berm. After impacting the guide rail, the operator slid into the path of the operator of the Harley Davidson. He swerved to avoid the Kawasaki and the operator and left the roadway along the southbound berm and struck a large culvert.
It was previously reported that the Kawasaki operator was transported to Altoona Hospital for his injuries and later died as a result. However, state police issued a report this morning saying the driver, Roger E. Baxter, age 68, of RR3, Altoona, was transported to Altoona Hospital and is listed in fair condition.
The Harley operator was killed instantly upon impact.
