The Tyrone area golf team took to Clinton Country Club in Lock Haven Thursday, Sept 4, to face off against Philipsburg-Osceola and Central Mountain.
The Golden Eagles had no problem with the Mounties, but that wasn’t quite the same for the squad from Central Mountain. Parker Everett from CM, led the way with a one-under par 71, that was good enough for a new CM school record. He was followed by scores of 76, 82 and 88 for a solid team score of 313.
Tyrone was led by Jimmy Ferguson posting his highest score this season (79) followed by James Russell’s 88. Eric Loose carded an 89 and rounding out the scoring was Kyle Updyke’s 94, for a total of 350.
Philipsburg-Osceola’s total was 432.
“We had a pretty decent day,” said coach Ferguson. “We played a course that none of the kids had ever seen, and I myself have not seen the course since the early 1980’s, so I had no helpful hints to give them. 350 was our lowest team score of the year (previous 351), we have improved each match. Central Mountain has a seasoned squad and they are very good. Our team is young and we are consistent. We have improved each match. Jimmy didn’t have his best day but James, Eric and Kyle picked up the difference by scoring a couple below their seasons average, so our team totals were just fine.
“James is getting better each time he tees it up, he will continue to get comfortable and improve with every competition. We have a couple of really good matches coming up before the conference championships, which are slated for October 1. We will be at it pretty hard now till the championship, I’m still very high on the kids, they are a great group.”
Next match is slated for Thursday 11, against Bellefonte and Huntingdon at the Nittany Country Club, with a 1:00 start.
