Checked your calendar lately? If your calendar is like mine, you have important notes indicating Penn State home football games, club meetings, birthdays, doctor’s appointments, dinner dates, and hair appointments. Our favorite public library has a calendar as well with several red letter dates in September.
It seems as if the library calendar should have this week marked as “Thanksgiving in September”. On Sunday, September 7, the library hosted its 4th annual Basket Bingo. To all businesses and individuals who supported this event, we offer our heartfelt thanks. We received donations of food, funds, and fabulous goodies for the many baskets. “Thank you” as well to the many dedicated bingo players and newbies alike whose attendance made the day a success. We wish to take this opportunity to recognize the Bald Eagle Fire Department for its repeated support of this worthwhile project. The Fire Department provided us with a location, all bingo equipment, and even a caller. Vicki Bell donated her time to help the library with this crucial fund raiser. Please watch the newspaper and the library website for a complete list of donors to this very successful event.
Also this week, the Tyrone Rotary Club presented the library with a $1,000 check as matching funds for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grant. This grant will add three new computers to the library’s computer lab for public access. Additional funds from this grant may be used to provide wireless service in the library in the near future. The generosity of Tyrone’s Rotarians will make it easier for students who don’t have computers at home to complete assignments and research on line.
Just this week, a new Story Hour session began on Wednesday. Currently, Story Hour registration is closed; but you may place your child’s name on a waiting list by calling 684-1133.
More activities for the young! Today was the first session for the Mom’s Group. This informal group meets at the library to share play time and to share experiences with their young children.
This group meets bi-weekly so mark September 25 for the next session if you are interested. On Wednesday, September 17, you are invited to attend a free program entitled Run Smart: Fuel Efficiency and Your Car. Mike Riley from the Blair County Conservation District will share tips on how to get the best gas mileage out of your car. This event begins at 5 p.m.
Calling all readers! Also on the library’s calendar for September is the first meeting of the Book Club. This group will meet on Friday, September 26 at 1 p.m. to discuss the book The Road by Cormack McCarthy. Susan Halverstadt will serve as discussion leader. Copies of the book are available at the library. Call 684-1133 if you are ready to mark your calendar for this activity.
Even though you may have a very busy calendar, we hope you’ll “save” some days for some of the exciting activities available this month at your public library. Hope to see you in the library soon.
