The Tyrone Church of the Brethren, for the second year in a row, is hosting a wonderful opportunity for the youth to learn fun, exciting and meaningful praise songs to help express their love for Jesus Christ and our Father in Heaven.
Sign ups for the summer praise program are being held through tomorrow, May 31.
The Praise Program idea was born out of Kristen Rhodes’ love for God, music and children. She is the minister of music at the Tyrone Church of the Brethren. She is a graduate of Duquesne University in piano performance and music technology. Kristen has also led many choral events involving youth as well as holding Cushions Concerts where young children come and listen to various kinds of music, and she teaches piano.
Seeing the potential for raising funds to help the community, Pastor Jeff Miley and Kristen looked at many needs in the community. The drug problem here affects everyone. The police respond frequently to drug and drug related incidents as part of their policing efforts. Families are destroyed by the drug problems we face and young lives are destroyed with each decision to experiment with drugs. The drug problem clearly and quickly rose to the surface as the cause to benefit from this effort.
By their efforts, and the efforts of parents and corporate sponsors, the children and youth raised $1,600 last year. The money was presented to Chief Beachem, of the Tyrone Police Department, at the conclusion of last year’s program. The Tyrone Police Department used the funds to purchase anti-drug literature, from Community Safety Net, to distribute to the children of the community.
Once again, two praise groups will be formed for grades kindergarten through fifth and sixth through 12th. Each age group will meet once a week to learn to sing contemporary, energetic praise songs while raising money to fight drugs in the community.
The cost of registration is $10 and the program will conclude in August with a choral concert for family, friends and the community on Sunday, August 26.
Last year’s event was enjoyed by almost 200 family, friends and well-wishers. The children and youth received a standing ovations and they certainly earned it.
All proceeds from the registration and concert will be donated to the Tyrone Police Department to be used in their anti-drug programs. Community Safety Net will once again be involved in providing materials and literature.
This is a worthwhile drug prevention and drug education program that has received the full support of the Tyrone Police Department.
First praise practices begin with grades kindergarten through fifth on Tuesday, June 5 and grade sixth through 12th on Wednesday, June 6.
