National Women\’s Health Week is May 13-19. The week is intended to encourage women to take simple steps for a longer, healthier, and happier life.
The week celebrates the extraordinary progress in women\’s health, brings attention to and creates an understanding of women\’s health issues, encourages women to get regular check-ups, and educates women about steps they can take to improve their physical and mental health and prevent disease.
“National Women\’s Health Week is important because it is a time dedicated to improving the health and well-being of women,” said Roy Pazmino, M.D, a Tyrone based gynecologist and member of the Tyrone Hospital medical staff. “When women take even the simplest steps to improve their health, the results can be significant.”
An important first step for women is getting an overall medical check-up. It determines a woman’s current state of health and creates an opportunity to discuss with her physician steps she can take to preserve her health and reduce her risk of developing certain diseases. And, a check-up is important in detecting any early signs of disease or illness.
“There are some general guidelines doctors follow regarding tests and exams that women need to have at different ages and stages of life,” said Dr. Pazmino. “Your doctor will make recommendations on what is appropriate for you based on your individual background and risk factors.”
Broad areas that need to be addressed include but are not limited to: heart health, reproductive/gynecological health, breast health, colorectal health, diabetes, bone health, oral health, eye and ear health, and skin health.
In recognition of National Women’s Health Week, Dr. Pazmino is providing a slide guide that outlines important tests for a woman’s good health. The guide was developed by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Office on Women’s Health.
The guide shows different categories and the tests and exams commonly used to evaluate health in those categories.
“We wanted to make the guide available to help educate women and remind them to take care of themselves.”
The slide guides are available at no charge and can be picked up at Dr. Pazmino’s office, located at 2 Hospital Drive on the campus of Tyrone Hospital. For more information on Dr. Pazmino’s practice visit www.gynehealth.org or call Dr. Pazmino at 684-4676.
