Next year will be the 38th year that the Presbyterian Preschool has served the families of the Tyrone area. Over the years the agenda has changed from strictly play to where it is now more academic in response to changing times. The philosophy is for children to meet, play, grow and work in a reasonably cooperative manner with the other children and adults. The preschool strives to establish independence, achieve self confidence and learn problem solving.
Each day includes free play, circle and story time, music, snack, art and writing and reading. Kindergarten readiness skills are integrated into daily activities to provide a foundation for future academic success. The staff wants children to develop an awareness and appreciation of the world around them and their special place in it, and to realize school can be a happy and rewarding experience. They wish to help them grow emotionally, share happily and to recognize that negative emotions are normal and to learn acceptable ways of coping with them.
They want to try and keep the program low key so that children can enjoy a little bit more of childhood.
On busy days, take the time to enjoy a child. Read a book, play a game or just talk and answer questions about simple everyday events. Be patient and encourage them to try and do things for themselves. Above all, accept children for who they are by showing a genuine interest in his or her activities and appreciating the things he or she does.
Applications are now being accepted for the 2007-08 school year. Classes are held for three, four and five-year-olds Monday through Friday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Children may be enrolled for three, four or five days a week. Parents and children are welcome to spend a morning visiting the classes.
