From the time our troops were called to duty overseas, many organizations got together to create care packages to be sent to the men and women serving our country.
The packages serve as a reminder for troops of the many people who support their efforts and are thankful for services.
For the troops, it’s often like receiving a little piece of home.
In Tyrone, local Brownie Troop 1231 and Junior Troop 1220 have not forgotten the service men and women overseas.
These young ladies recently got together to create special care packages to be sent to the men and women serving this country.
The girls gathered many different items to send, including many things that are not often received such as phone cards, batteries, snack items and chocolate.
They also included many cards, notes and pictures.
Troop 1231 also put together a very special gift they called “Military Service Kits”.
The girls put together 42 of these kits which included items with special meaning for military personnel.
A special note included in the kit explained all the items the girls had collected. It read, “Lifesavers to remind you that’s what you are; Mounds bars to remind you of the mounds of love and support you have from your family and friends; a pack of gum to help your unit stick together; a cotton ball to cushion the rough roads; a shiny penny to remind you that we each shine in our own way; a hug to let you know there is always someone on your side; a mint because you are worth a mint; a candle to light up the darkness; a Tootsie Roll to help you roll with the punches; a Snickers to remind you to laugh and a Kiss so that you will always remember that we love you! God bless the USA!”
Both Girl Scout Troops are sponsored by the Church of the Good Shepherd in Tyrone. Brownie Troop 1231 leaders are Peggy Cox, Kim Wilson and JoLynn Baran. Junior Troop 1220 leaders are Cindy Gearhart and Jennifer Vance.
