The Grier School’s 26th edition of International Night was held Wednesday, February 7.
International Night is a long-lasting tradition at Grier. This annual event started in 1980 to help American students appreciate the many different cultures within the school. It is a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere.
Students in groups choose one country to represent. This year, there were 12 groups representing 15 countries.
During the day, each group prepares a 3-minute live performance (dance, song, skit, etc…) which is directly inspired from the country’s traditional folklore. Traditional outfits, music, and accessories help make this experience unforgettable. Each group also prepares three or four traditional dishes from the country it chose.
In the evening, the groups take turns performing on stage in the auditorium. After the performances, the evening continues in the cafeteria where everyone can sample the wonderful foods cooked by the students. The tables, arranged buffet style, are beautifully decorated, and each represents one country.
All the students participate in a group unless they are working with the program committee with such things as lighting. All teachers participate as either group leaders or in capacities such as program coordinators, dining room and auditorium organizers, or kitchen and dining room cleanup. The kitchen staff orders the food and gets it ready for each group. It really takes the cooperation of the entire school to make this day a success.
Cleaning up is hardly a chore in the aftermath of this joyful celebration of cultural diversity. At the end of the evening, everyone is left with undying memories and a smile on their face.
